Hetti Perkins
Hetti Kemerre Perkins (born 1965) is an art curator and writer. She is the eldest daughter of Australian Aboriginal activist Charles Perkins and German Eileen Munchenberg, a granddaughter of Hetty Perkins, sister to film director Rachel Perkins and brother Adam Perkins, and mother to actress Madeleine Madden. Hetti Perkins is an Eastern Arrernte and Kalkadoon woman from Central Australia, she attended Melrose High School in Canberra, with her sister. Hetti Perkins was the curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney for thirteen years, but resigned from the job in 2011. She was a member of the International Selection Committee for the Biennale of Sydney in 2000. Charles Perkins (Aboriginal Activist)
Charles Nelson Perkins , usually known as Charlie Perkins (16 June 1936 – 19 October 2000), was an Aboriginal Australian activist, soccer player and administrator. He was the first Indigenous Australian man to graduate tertiary education, and is known for his instigation and organisation of the 1965 Freedom Ride and his key role in advocating for a "yes" vote in the 1967 referendum. He had a long career as a public servant. Early life and family Perkins was born on 16 June 1936 in the old Alice Springs Telegraph Station to Hetty Perkins, originally from nearby Arltunga, and Martin Connelly, originally from Mount Isa, Queensland. His mother was born to a white father and an Arrernte mother, while his father had an Irish father and a Kalkadoon mother. Australian Broadcasting Corporation
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is the national broadcaster of Australia. It is principally funded by direct grants from the Australian Government and is administered by a government-appointed board. The ABC is a publicly-owned body that is politically independent and fully accountable, with its charter enshrined in legislation, the ''Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983''. Indigenous Australians or Australian First Nations are people with familial heritage from, and membership in, the ethnic groups that lived in Australia before British colonisation. They consist of two distinct groups: the Aboriginal peoples of the Australian mainland and Tasmania, and the Torres Strait Islander peoples from the seas between Queensland and Papua New Guinea. Papunya Tula
Papunya Tula, registered as Papunya Tula Artists Pty Ltd, is an artist cooperative formed in 1972 in Papunya, Northern Territory, owned and operated by Aboriginal people from the Western Desert of Australia. The group is known for its innovative work with the Western Desert Art Movement, popularly referred to as "dot painting". Credited with bringing contemporary Aboriginal art to world attention, its artists inspired many other Australian Aboriginal artists and styles. The company operates today out of Alice Springs and its artists are drawn from a large area, extending into Western Australia, west of Alice Springs. Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative
The Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative was founded in 1987 in the Sydney suburb of Redfern, New South Wales. Among the legacies of the cooperative are the Deadly Awards for achievement in the Indigenous Australian community, which have occurred annually from 1995 to the present. The 20th anniversary of the cooperative was celebrated in 2007 with an exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW. The founding members of the cooperative are Michael Riley (1960–2004), Avril Quaill, Tracey Moffatt, Fiona Foley, Brenda L Croft, Jeffrey Samuels, Euphemia Bostock, Fern Martins, Bronwyn Bancroft and Arone Meeks.
