Hesperiini
The Hesperiini or branded grass skippers are a tribe (biology), tribe in the Hesperiinae subfamily of skipper butterflies. They are known as branded grass skippers because all the males in this tribe feature a black diagonal ''brand'' of scales on their forewings that exude pheromones to attract females. Some subspecies of Hesperiini, such as Thespius Maacki, are found in high-altitude grasslands in areas like Araçatuba Mountain in Paraná, Brazil. Hesperiinae
Grass skippers or banded skippers are butterflies of the subfamily Hesperiinae, part of the skipper family, Hesperiidae. The subfamily was established by Pierre André Latreille in 1809. Description and distribution With over 2,000 described species, this is the largest skipper butterfly subfamily and occurs worldwide except in New Zealand. About 50 percent of grass skippers live in the Neotropics. 137 species are native to North America. Around 38 species are native to Australia. Genera ''Ochlodes'' and ''Hesperia'' exist exclusively in the Holarctic. They are usually orange, rust, or brown in colour and have pointed forewings. Many species have dark markings or black stigmas on their forewings. Most members of this subfamily have an oval antenna club with an apiculus on the tip, although '' Carterocephalus'' and '' Piruna'' do not. The antennae generally has a sharp bend. Hesperiinae larvae feed on many different types of grasses and sedges and palms, though some species ar ... Large Skipper
The large skipper (''Ochlodes sylvanus'') is a butterfly of the family Hesperiidae. Taxonomy It was long known as ''Ochlodes venatus'', but this is a Far Eastern relative. There is still some dispute whether this species should be considered a distinct species or included in ''O. venatus'' as a subspecies. Under International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, ICZN rules the specific name, originally proposed as ''Papilio sylvanus'', is invalid as a homonym (of the butterfly now called ''Anthene sylvanus''), but it has been conserved by an International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, ICZN commission decision in 2000. Distribution and habitat This species occurs from Europe to the East Palearctic realm (northern Asia, China and Japan). In the British Isles it occurs in England, Wales, and south western and southeastern Scotland. It can be found anywhere where wild grasses are allowed to grow tall. Hedgerows, woodland clearings and edges are favourites. Description ''Ochlode ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
