Hersonissos F.C.
Hersonissos (), previously known as Olimpiakos Sindesmos Filathlon Chersonissou (), is a Greek football club based in Chersonisos, Crete in Greece. The club was founded in 1979. They currently compete in the Heraklion FCA Α1 Division and host their home games in the Hersonissos Municipal Stadium. History For several years, Hersonissos played in the Delta Ethniki, the (now defunct) fourth tier of the Greek football league system. In 2008, Hersonissos won the Delta Ethniki Group 10 championship, earning promotion to the Gamma Ethniki for the first time in the club's history. They played for three straight seasons in the Gamma Ethniki, managing an all-time best sixth-place finish during the 2009−10 edition of the competition. However, in 2011 they were relegated back to the Delta Ethniki. Hersonissos (, meaning “peninsula”, ''Chersónisos'', ), also transliterated as ''Chersonissos'' and ''Hersónisos'', is a town and a local government unit in the north of Crete, bordering the Mediterranean / Aegean Sea. The town is about 25 kilometers east of Heraklion and west of Agios Nikolaos. What is usually called Hersonissos is in fact its peninsula and harbour. It is part of the Heraklion regional unit. It is situated 25 km from the Heraklion airport and 27 km from the Heraklion port. The seat of the local government unit is the village of Gournes.
