Herresta
Herresta is a large estate in Södermanland County in Sweden, located outside Mariefred. It has been in the possession of the Paus family since 1923. The manor lies beautifully adjacent to Herrestaviken, which was previously connected to Mälaren. Previous owners include Admiral Baron Jonas Fredrik Örnfelt. He built the main house in stone in 1718, using Russian prisoners of war. Count Johan Georg Lillienberg, who was Governor of Uppsala and President of the Appellate Court, among other offices, extended the manor substantially. In 1810, Herresta was sold to wealthy Stockholm businessman Carl Adolph Grevesmühl. His descendants sold the manor to the Norwegian count Christopher de Paus in 1923. Himself childless, he bequeathed the estate to a distant relative, Herman Paus, who was married to a granddaughter of Count Leo Tolstoy, the Russian novelist. Christopher De Paus
Count Christopher de Paus (10 September 1862 – 10 September 1943) was a Norway, Norwegian-born aristocrat, papal courtier and philanthropist. A member of the Paus family—the name means pope—he was heir to the Norwegian timber firm Tostrup & Mathiesen and inherited a fortune from his grandfather, timber magnate Christopher Henrik Holfeldt Tostrup, Christopher Tostrup. From the 1870s, he spent much of his life in Rome, where he converted to Catholicism. He was appointed as a papal chamberlain by Pope Benedict XV in 1921 and conferred the title of count by Pope Pius XI in 1923. He was a prominent benefactor of museums and the Catholic Church. Johan Georg Lillienberg
Johan Georg Lillienberg (1713 – 1798) was a Swedish count and politician who was appointed as Lawspeaker of Gotland in 1746. In 1749, he became Governor of Åbo and Björneborg County, and in 1757 Governor of Uppsala County. Lillienberg was made a baron in 1766 and a count in 1778. In 1768, Lillienberg was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Mariefred
Mariefred is a locality situated in Strängnäs Municipality, Södermanland County, Sweden with 7,121 inhabitants in 2023. The name is derived from that of the former Carthusian monastery in the city, Mariefred Charterhouse, and means "Peace of Mary" (the previous name being Gripsholm). It lies roughly 50 kilometres west of Stockholm by lake Mälaren. Mariefred is, despite its small population, for historical reasons often still referred to as a ''city''. Mälaren
Mälaren ( , , or ), historically referred to as Lake Malar in English, is the third-largest freshwater lake in Sweden (after Vänern and Vättern). Its area is and its greatest depth is 64 m (210 ft). Mälaren spans from east to west.
