Yoshishige Yoshida
, also known as Kijū Yoshida, was a Japanese film director and screenwriter. Life and career Graduating from the University of Tokyo, where he studied French literature, Yoshida entered the Shōchiku studio in 1955 and worked as an assistant to Keisuke Kinoshita, before debuting as a director in 1960 with ''Rokudenashi''. He was a central member of what came to be called the "Shōchiku Nouvelle Vague" along with Nagisa Oshima and Masahiro Shinoda, and his works have been studied under the larger rubric of the Japanese New Wave, a linkage which Yoshida himself disliked. Like many of his New Wave cohorts, he felt restricted under the studio system. After Shōchiku's re-editing of his ''Escape from Japan'' (1964), he left the studio to start his own production company, for which he directed such films as ''Eros + Massacre''. Mariko Okada
is a Japanese stage and film actress who starred in films of directors Mikio Naruse, Yasujirō Ozu, Keisuke Kinoshita and others. She was married to film director Yoshishige Yoshida. Biography Okada was born the daughter of silent film actor Tokihiko Okada (real name Eiichi Takahashi), who died the year following her birth, and raised by her mother's sister in her early childhood. She gave her film debut in Mikio Naruse's 1951 ''Dancing Girl (1951 film), Dancing Girl'', for whom she worked again in ''Husband and Wife (1953 film), Husband and Wife'', ''Floating Clouds'' and ''Nagareru''. Unsatisfied with the roles she was assigned to, she left Toho studios after her contract expired, and signed with Shochiku. Toshi Ichiyanagi
was a Japanese avant-garde composer and pianist. One of the leading composers in Japan during the postwar era, Ichiyanagi worked in a range of genres, composing Western-style operas and orchestral and chamber works, as well as compositions using traditional Japanese instruments. Ichiyanagi is known for incorporating avant-garde techniques into his works, such as chance music, extended technique, and nontraditional scoring. Ichiyanagi was married to artist Yoko Ono from 1956 to 1962. Early life and education Ichiyanagi was born in Kobe on 4 February 1933. He studied composition with Tomojirō Ikenouchi, , and John Cage. The Art Theatre Guild (ATG) was a Japanese film production and distribution company which started in 1961, releasing mostly Japanese New Wave and art films. The programming was complemented by a print magazine called ''Art Theatre'' containing articles, summaries, and film criticism. From the late 1960s to the mid 1980s, it also often acted as producer. is a 1969 Japanese experimental drama film directed by Yoshishige Yoshida, who wrote it in cooperation with Masahiro Yamada. The film is a biography of anarchist Sakae Ōsugi, who was murdered by the Japanese military police in 1923 (see Amakasu Incident). It is the first film in a loose trilogy, followed by '' Heroic Purgatory'' (1970) and '' Coup d'État'' (1973). Plot The story tells of Ōsugi's relationship with three women: Hori Yasuko, his wife; Noe Itō, his third lover, who was to die with him; and his jealous, second lover, Itsuko Masaoka (modeled after Ichiko Kamichika), a militant feminist who attempts to kill him in a tea house in 1916. Parallel to the telling of Ōsugi's life, two students (Eiko and Wada) do research on the political theories and ideas of free love that he upheld.
