Herman Moll (convict)
Herman Joseph Moll (31 January 183818 December 1882) was a Convict era of Western Australia, convict penal transportation, transported to Western Australia. He was one of only four such convicts to be elected to the prestigious and respected position of member of a local Education Board. Biography Born in Cologne Germany, the son of Joseph Moll, a tobacco merchant, and Sophia Eick, he went to England 1856 aged 18 where he worked for John Wich, Belgian Consul and Merchant. Later described as a "London man of business", he was convicted of forgery, forging and uttering in 1861 stealing 150 pounds from Wich. Sentenced to ten years' penal labour, penal servitude, he was transported to Western Australia on board , arriving in December 1862. Moll was described as having greyish hair and hazel eyes. Convict Era Of Western Australia
The convict era of Western Australia was the period during which Western Australia was a penal colony of the British Empire. Although it received small numbers of juvenile offenders from 1842, it was not formally constituted as a penal colony until 1849. Daniel Connor
Daniel Connor (183112 January 1898) was an Irish people, Irish convict penal transportation, transported to colony of Western Australia, colonial Western Australia, who would go on to become one of the wealthiest, and most successful men in the region. Daniel Connor was born in County Kerry, Ireland in 1831. Nothing is known of his early life, but on 20 June 1850, he was sentenced to seven years' transportation for sheep stealing. He arrived in Western Australia on on 30 August 1853. Cossack, Western Australia
Cossack, known as Bajinhurrba in Ngarluma language, and formerly known as Tien Tsin, is a historic ghost town located north of Perth and from Roebourne in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The nearest town to Cossack, which is located on Butcher Inlet (also called Butcher's Inlet) at the mouth of the Harding River, is Wickham. The former Tien Tsin Harbour is now known as Port Walcott. Since 2021, the townsite is managed and operated by the Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi Foundation Ltd (NYFL). Hale School
Hale School is an independent, Anglican day and boarding school for boys, located in Wembley Downs, a western suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Named after the school founded by Bishop Mathew Blagden Hale in 1858, Hale School claims to be the oldest private boys' school in Western Australia, a claim subsequently contested by historian and former Hale School Headmaster Dr. Ken Tregonning. The school was originally situated at the Cloisters on St Georges Terrace in Perth, relocated to the Pensioner Guard Barracks at the top of St. George's Terrace around 1880, and then again relocated to its new Havelock Street premises in 1914 in West Perth. James Elphinstone Roe
James Elphinstone Roe (May 1897) was a convict transported to Western Australia. After serving his sentence he became one of the colony's ex-convict school teachers. Through his agitation for education reform, he played an important role in "shaping the education system and political policies in the colony". He later distinguished himself as a journalist. James Elphinstone Roe was born in Kirkby on Bain, Lincolnshire, and baptised there on 18 October 1818. His father was Rev. Thomas Roe, the town's rector, and his mother was Catherine Sarah née Elphinstone. Nothing is known of his childhood, but in June 1836 he began studies at Worcester College, Oxford. James Hasleby
James Hasleby (born 1833, Stamford Lincs UK; died 1903, Northampton, Western Australia), was an English convict transported to colonial Western Australia. He was one of only 37 convicts transported to the colony to overcome the social stigma of convictism to become school teachers, and one of only four convicts to be elected a member of a local Education Board. Notwithstanding his previous conviction at the Old Bailey, in 1893 he was appointed Clerk of the Local Court at Northampton. Little is known of James Hasleby's early life. Born in 1833, he worked as a clerk. At the Old Bailey in February 1864 he pleaded guilty to three indictments for embezzlement, after a former conviction at Preston in October, 1856 and was sentenced to eight years penal servitude.
