Herman Howard
Herman Eugene Howard (March 10, 1910 – December 30, 1969), nicknamed "Red", was an American Negro league pitcher between 1937 and 1946. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Howard made his Negro leagues debut in 1937 with the Birmingham Black Barons. He went on to play for several teams, finishing his career in 1946 with the Chicago American Giants The Chicago American Giants were a Chicago-based Negro league baseball team. The Negro leagues were United States professional baseball leagues comprising teams of African Americans. The term may be used broadly to include professional black teams outside the leagues and it may be used narrowly for the seven relatively successful leagues beginning in 1920 that are sometimes termed "Negro Major Leagues". In the late 19th century, the baseball color line developed, excluding African Americans from play in major baseball leagues and affiliated minor leagues (collectively known as organized baseball).
