Herdla (island)
Herdla is an island in the municipality of Askøy in Vestland county, Norway. The island lies just north of the larger island of Askøy (island), Askøy and just west of the island of Holsnøy. The island is surrounded by the Herdlefjorden and Hjeltefjorden. The island of Herdla was part of the municipality of Herdla until 1 January 1964 when it was merged into Askøy. The island has a nature reserve with 220 registered species of birds. During the Second World War, it was the site of Herdla Airport and some coastal fortifications. Herdla Church is located on the island. Air base and coastal fortifications During the Second World War, all of Herdla was in effect a military base for the German Luftwaffe. The flat area "Herdlevalen" was considered a good place for an airport. The air base at Herdla was important to defend the west coast of Norway against Allied attacks. Herdla is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county in Norway. The municipality existed from 1871 until its dissolution in 1964. The municipality encompassed a large group of about 2,000 islands and skerries covering about of land area, to the northwest of the city of Bergen in what is now parts of Øygarden, Alver, and Askøy municipalities in Vestland county. Black Friday (1945)
On 9 February 1945, near the end of the Second World War, a force of Allied Bristol Beaufighter aircraft suffered many losses during an attack on the German destroyer German destroyer Z33, ''Z33'' and its escorting vessels; the operation was called Black Friday by the survivors. The German ships were sheltering in a strong defensive position in Førde Fjord, Norway, forcing the Allied aircraft to attack through massed anti-aircraft fire (''FlaK''). The Beaufighters and their escort of North American P-51 Mustang, Mustang Mk III fighters from 65 Squadron RAF were intercepted by twelve Focke-Wulf Fw 190s of ''Jagdgeschwader 5'' (Fighter Wing 5) of the ''Luftwaffe''. The Allies damaged at least two of the German ships for the loss of seven Beaufighters shot down by FlaK. Herdla Church
Herdla Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Askøy Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located on the small island of Herdla. It is the church for the Herdla parish which is part of the Vesthordland prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, stone church was built in a long church design in 1863 using plans drawn up by the architect Christian Heinrich Grosch. The church seats about 540 people. History The oldest existing written accounts of this church on Herdla is a letter from Pope Eugenius III in 1146 that mentions "St. Nicholas's Church on Herdla" .
