Herbert Plank
Herbert Plank (born 3 September 1954) is a former Italy, Italian Alpine skiing, alpine skier who competed in the 1976 Winter Olympics and in the 1980 Winter Olympics. Biography In 1976 he won the bronze medal in the Alpine Alpine skiing at the 1976 Winter Olympics – Men's downhill, downhill event. That event also counted as a FIS Alpine World Championship. Four years later he finished sixth in the Alpine skiing at the 1980 Winter Olympics – Men's downhill, 1980 downhill competition. Mr. Plank is the youngest winner of a male downhill race (Val d'Isère, 10 December 1973). He won five downhill races in the World Cup; in the downhill races he achieved second place nine times and third six times; he also became second in the Alpine Combined at St. Anton am Arlberg on 1 December 1981. Sterzing
Sterzing (; ) is a comune in South Tyrol in northern Italy. It is the main town of the southern Wipptal, and the Eisack River flows through the medieval town. It is one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia ("The most beautiful villages of Italy"). History Origin The town traces its roots to 14 B.C., when Nero Claudius Drusus founded a military camp called "Vipitenum" along the road between what are now Italy and Germany. Ancient ruins found nearby include a sepulchral monument dedicated to Postumia Vittorina, a milestone of the Imperator Septimius Severus period and a stone altar dedicated to Lord Mithras. Alpine skiing has been contested at every Winter Olympics since 1936, when a combined event was held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. From 1948 to 1980, the Winter Olympics also served as the World Championships in Olympic years, with separate competitions held in even-numbered non-Olympic years. During this period, the Olympic medalists received an additional medal of the same metal from the International Ski Federation (FIS). The giant slalom was introduced at the 1950 World Championships and at the Olympics in 1952; both programs dropped the combined event, but it returned in 1954 at the World Championships as a "paper" race, using the results of the slalom, giant slalom, and downhill.
