Herbert "Herb" James Gavin (15 November 1921 in Winterset, Iowa – 27 June 2009 in California) was an American Chief Test Pilot in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. He retired on 1 June 1978 as Major General. Winterset, Iowa
Winterset is a city in and the county seat of Madison County, Iowa. The population was 5,353 at the time of the 2020 census. Winterset is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. History Winterset was platted during a cool spell in the summer of 1849. The name was originally to be "Summerset", but the unseasonable coldness made the commissioners reverse this to "Winterset". On March 5, 2022, a low-end EF4 tornado struck the areas just outside the city, killing six people. Geography Winterset is located in central Madison County at the intersection of U.S. Route 169 and Iowa State Highway 92. Middle River flows past the south side of the city. The Legion of Merit is a decoration of the United States and is awarded to foreign military personnel in four grades and to U.S. military personnel without distinction of degree. The following are notable recipients within the award. Chief Commander Commander Officer * At the beginning of the North African campaign, Brigadier General Lyman L. Lemnitzer accompanied Major General Mark Wayne Clark by submarine to North Africa. Upon arrival, about 60 officers were awarded the Legion of Merit and were among the first awarded the medal. By some misunderstanding as to the rules governing the awards, these 60 American officers were awarded the degree of ''Officer''.
