Henry Rice (January 15, 1786 – October 15, 1867) was an American Army officer in the War of 1812, a leading Boston merchant, a member of the Boston City Council and a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Biography Henry Rice was born in Marlborough, Massachusetts on 15 January 1786 to Noah Rice and Hannah Palfrey (Cole) Rice. He served as an officer in the War of 1812, attaining the rank of major. He married Maria Burroughs of Boston on 26 February 1816, and they had five children. Rice served as a member of the City of Boston Common Council from 1832 to 1834, and in 1838, and served for six years as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He was a trader of imported goods in Boston and lived at 8 Bulfinch Street in Boston's Beacon Hill district, but he maintained a substantial estate in Marlborough that he inherited from his father Noah. Henry Rice (1585 or 1586 – 1651) was a Wales, Welsh writer and gentleman at the court of Charles I of England, King Charles I. Life Rice was part of the Rice family from Wales that included Gruffydd ap Rhys ap Thomas (died 1521) amongst its members - Rice was his great-great-grandfather. The son of Gruffydd ap Rhys ap Thomas, Rhys ap Gruffudd, was executed for treason in 1531 and his property was confiscated. Subsequent generations, including Rice's father (Sir Walter Rice) and Rice, spent much time and effort in attempts to claim back the confiscated land from the Crown. Rice himself matriculation, matriculated at Jesus College, Oxford on 7 December 1607 at the age of 21, obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree 10 days later on 17 December 1607. He became a gentleman of the privy chamber to Charles I of England, King Charles I and used his position to present petitions for the return of family estates in 1625 and 1629. Henry Mower Rice (November 29, 1816January 15, 1894) was a fur trader and an American politician prominent in the statehood of Minnesota. Early life Henry Rice was born on November 29, 1816, in Waitsfield, Vermont to Edmund Rice and Ellen (Durkee) Rice. Both Edmund and Ellen were of entirely English ancestry; their ancestors had been in New England since the early 1600s. Rice lived with family friends from an early age due to the death of his father. When Rice was 18, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, and participated in the surveying of the canal route around the rapids of Sault Ste. Marie between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. In 1839 Rice secured a job at Fort Snelling, near what is now Minneapolis, Minnesota. He became a fur trader with the Ho-Chunk and Chippewa (Ojibwe) Indians, attaining a position of prominence and influence.
