Henry Francis Shoemaker (March 28, 1843 – July 2, 1918) was an American railroad magnate and financier. Early life Shoemaker was born in Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania, on March 28, 1843. He was the second son of Mary Ann ( Brock) Shoemaker (1821–1891) and John Wise Shoemaker (1811–1863), who invested in anthracite coal industry in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. His maternal grandfather was a coal operator of English and Scotch-Irish Americans, Scotch-Irish descent. The first Shoemaker was a Quaker who arrived in Germantown, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, Germantown, Pennsylvania, from Holland in 1685, but was whose family came from the Palatinate (region), Palatinate region of Germany. Shoemaker attended Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, Genesee Seminary (which later became Syracuse University), from which he graduated in 1861. Orwigsburg is a borough in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. The borough was named for its founder, Peter Orwig, and created from West Brunswick Township in 1823. Orwigsburg was the original county seat until the seat was moved to Pottsville in 1851. The population was 3,002 at the time of the 2020 census.
