Henry Dallas Helmcken
Henry Dallas "Harry" Helmcken (December 23, 1859 – July 6, 1912https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/98143353/henry-dallas-helmcken) was a lawyer and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Victoria City in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1894 to 1903. Biography Helmcken was born in 1859, the son of Cecilia Douglas and John Sebastian Helmcken. His mother was the daughter of Sir James Douglas, and his father was a physician. He was educated at the Nest Academy in Jedburgh, Scotland, the universities of Edinburgh and London and at Osgoode Hall. In 1895, he married Hannah Jane Goodwin, a widow. Helmcken was director of the Jubilee Hospital. The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia is the deliberative assembly of the Parliament of British Columbia, in the province of British Columbia, Canada. John Sebastian Helmcken
John Sebastian Helmcken (June 5, 1824 – September 1, 1920) was a British Columbia physician who played a prominent role in bringing the province into Canadian Confederation. He was also the founding president of the British Columbia Medical Association. Early life John Sebastian Helmcken was born in London, England, the son of ethnically-German parents Claus Helmcken and Catherine Mittler. His education was at St. George's German and English school, and after apprenticing as a druggist and physician, at Guy's Hospital. He was hired aboard the Hudson's Bay Company's ''Prince Rupert'' as a ship's surgeon on its 1847 voyage to York Factory, Rupert's Land. After completing his certification at Guy's Hospital, he travelled to India and China. He had intended to join the Navy, but was persuaded instead to join the HBC in 1849 as a physician and clerk on to be stationed on Vancouver Island. James Douglas (governor)
Sir James Douglas (August 15, 1803 – August 2, 1877) was a Canadian fur trader and politician who became the first Governor of the Colony of British Columbia. He is often credited as "The Father of British Columbia." He was instrumental to the resettlement of 35 African-Americans fleeing a life of racial persecution in San Francisco who arrived in the province aboard the steampship ''Commodore'' in what later became known as the Pioneer Committee. In 1863, Douglas was knighted by Queen Victoria for his services to the Crown. He started work at 16 for the North West Company and then the Hudson's Bay Company and became a high-ranking officer. From 1851 to 1864, he was Governor of the Colony of Vancouver Island. Osgoode Hall Law School, commonly shortened to Osgoode, is the law school of York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Royal Jubilee Hospital is a 500-bed general hospital in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada located about east of the city centre, in the Jubilee neighbourhood (itself named after the hospital). Overview Its name commemorates the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887. Founded in 1890, Royal Jubilee was Victoria's main hospital until 1983, when an expanded Victoria General Hospital re-opened in the suburban municipality of View Royal. Royal Jubilee offers critical-care, surgery, diagnostics, emergency facilities and other patient programs. It has a particular focus on cardiac medicine.
