Henri LaRue
Joseph-Ernest-Henri LaRue (15 February 1892 – 20 October 1973) was a Conservative member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Baie-des-Sables, Quebec and became a notary. LaRue attended school at the Quebec Seminary, then Université Laval. He was elected to Parliament at the Matane riding in the 1930 general election. 1940 Canadian Federal Election
The 1940 Canadian federal election was held March 26, 1940, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 19th Parliament of Canada. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King's Liberal Party was re-elected to their second consecutive majority government. The election was overshadowed by the Second World War, which caused many Canadians to rally around the government. In response to this, the Conservative Party of Robert Manion ran on a platform advocating the creation of an all-party national unity government and ran under the name "National Government" in this election. Though Manion was personally opposed to conscription, the Liberals faced intense pressure in Quebec on the question and promised not to institute the measure. This promise was to haunt the Liberals as they faced increasing pressure from the military and especially from English Canada to bring in the measure. The 1935 Canadian federal election was held on October 14, 1935, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 18th Parliament of Canada. The Liberal Party of William Lyon Mackenzie King won a majority government, defeating Prime Minister R. B. Bennett's Conservatives. The central issue was the economy, which was still in the depths of the Great Depression. In office since the 1930 election, Bennett had sought to stimulate the economy during his first few years through a policy of high tariffs and trade within the British Empire. In the last months of his time in office, he reversed his position, copying the popular New Deal of Franklin Roosevelt in the United States. Upset about high unemployment and inaction by the federal government, voters were unwilling to allow the Conservatives to continue to govern, despite their change of policy. Arthur-Joseph Lapointe
Arthur-Joseph Lapointe (13 February 1895 – 5 January 1960) was a Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Saint-Ulric, Quebec in Matane County and became a railway station agent by career. Lapointe was educated at seminary in Rimouski. He served in the military during World War I with postings at France and Belgium, attaining a rank of Lieutenant. Matane (federal Electoral District)
Matane was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1917 to 1935, and from 1968 to 1979. This riding was created in 1914 from parts of Rimouski riding. It consisted of the part of the county of Rimouski east of the Métis River excluding the part of the parish of St. Angèle de Mérici east of the Métis River. In 1924, it was redefined to consist of the Counties of Matane and Matapédia. The electoral district was abolished in 1933 when it was redistributed between Gaspé and Matapédia—Matane ridings. It was recreated in 1966 from parts of those two ridings.
