Henichesk Bridge
Henichesk Bridge () is a rail and road bridge located in southern Ukraine. It was designed by Waagner-Biro and built in 1915. The bridge is an icon of the European architecture style that this group utilizes. Location This bridge is located in the Henichesk Raion of Kherson Oblast, and traverses the Henichesk Strait. This bridge connects the Arabat Spit with the European mainland, and is therefore a strategically significant point. History The Henichesk Bridge was built in 1915 by Waagner-Biro. In 1951, German engineers transported this bridge from the Belarussian city of Orsha towards Henichesk. This bridge replaced a wooden bridge at a similar location, which was destroyed during the Second World War. Azov Sea
The Sea of Azov is an inland shelf sea in Eastern Europe connected to the Black Sea by the narrow (about ) Strait of Kerch, and sometimes regarded as a northern extension of the Black Sea. The sea is bounded by Russia on the east, and by Ukraine on the northwest and southwest (the parts of Ukraine bordering the sea are currently under Russian occupation). It is an important access route for Central Asia, from the Caspian Sea via the Volga–Don Canal. The sea is largely affected by the inflow of the Don, Kuban, and other rivers, which bring sand, silt, and shells, which in turn form numerous bays, limans, and narrow spits. Novooleksiivka
Novooleksiivka () is a rural settlement in Henichesk urban hromada, Henichesk Raion, Kherson Oblast, Ukraine. It had a population of History In 1874 under the Russian Empire, a small railway station called Novooleksiivka was founded near a village of the same name (now renamed Oleksyivka). A new settlement gradually arose around the station, eventually became a village as well. As the cargo turnover of the station was small, the population of Novooleksiivka was mainly engaged in agriculture. It was a part of the Dniprovsky district of the Tavriya Governorate at that time. In 1908, the first school was built at Novooleksiivka at the expense of local peasants, where 2 teachers were employed and 64 pupils were engaged. Hero Of Ukraine
A Hero of Ukraine (HOU; ) is the highest national decoration that can be conferred upon an individual citizen by the president of Ukraine. The decoration was created in 1998 by President Leonid Kuchma. As of 6 June 2025, the total number of recipients had been 1109. Additionally, at least 29 decrees assigned have not been published. Vitalii Skakun
Vitalii Volodymyrovych Skakun (; 19 August 1996 – 24 February 2022) was a Ukrainian marine combat engineer who was posthumously awarded the Hero of Ukraine, Order of the Gold Star. He sacrificed his life in the Russian invasion of Ukraine while blowing up Henichesk Bridge, a bridge in Henichesk while he was still on it to slow the advance of Russian troops during the Southern Ukraine campaign. Early life Skakun was born on 19 August 1996 in Berezhany in western Ukraine. He attended the No. 3 school in Berezhany, where his mother was a member of the teaching staff. Later in Lviv, Skakun graduated from Higher Vocational School No. 20, where he studied to be a welder. He graduated from Lviv Polytechnic. Henichesk (, ; , ) is a port city along the Sea of Azov in Kherson Oblast, southern Ukraine. It serves as the administrative centre of Henichesk Raion. Since 9 November 2022, it has served as the temporary administrative centre of the Russian occupation administration in the region. The Henichesk Strait (alternatively Genichesk Strait; , , ,) is a narrow strait which connects the Syvash (the shallow lagoon system separating the Crimea from the rest of Ukraine east of the Isthmus of Perekop) with the Sea of Azov.
