Hendrik Gaobaeb
Hendrik Gaobaeb (born 24 April 1964) is a Namibian politician. He is the president of the United Democratic Front since January 2024 and its presidential candidate in the 2024 Namibian general election. Gaobaeb is a member of the United Democratic Front (UDF) since 1980. He holds a National Diploma in Public Administration from the Polytechnic of Namibia (today Namibia University of Science and Technology). From 1996 to 2004 he was CEO of Khorixas. Gaobaeb won the 2004 regional election for UDF in Sesfontein Constituency. He was reelected in the 2010 regional election. In this second term as constituency councillor he was elected regional councillor and represented Kunene Region in the National Council. In the 2015 regional election Gaobaeb lost Sesfontein constituency to Julius Koujova of SWAPO. In the 2020 regional election he again became councillor. Sesfontein
Sesfontein is a settlement in the Kunene Region of Namibia, situated from the regional capital Opuwo. It is the district capital of Sesfontein Constituency with a population of 7,358. Sesfontein derives its name from the six fountains which have their source in the vicinity. The settlement features a clinic. National Council (Namibia)
The National Council is the upper chamber of Namibia's bicameral Parliament. It reviews bills passed by the lower chamber and makes recommendations for legislation of regional concern to the lower chamber. The 42 National Council members are indirectly elected by regional councils for a term of five years. Each of the 14 regional councils chooses three of its members to serve on the National Council. The last regional council elections were held on 25 November 2020. The ''New Era'' is a daily national newspaper owned by the government of Namibia. The newspaper is one of four daily national newspapers in the country, the others being ''The Namibian'' (English and Oshiwambo), '' Die Republikein'' (Afrikaans) and '' Allgemeine Zeitung'' ( German). ''New Era'' was created by the ''New Era Publications Corporation Act of 1992''. According to Ullamaija Kivikuru, it copied the format of ''The Namibian'' in order to establish credibility. 2020 Namibian Local And Regional Elections
Local and regional elections were held in Namibia on 25 November 2020 to elect new local and regional councils. The previous round of elections was 2015 Namibian local and regional elections, held in 2015 and won by the ruling SWAPO party. Electoral system Elections for regional councils are held using the first-past-the-post electoral system. Voters in each constituency elect one councillor to represent them on their regional council. Local authority councillors are elected by a system of proportional representation. Local authority candidate lists have affirmative action requirements for women. Election process Although Namibia has 1.35 million registered voters, only about 370,000 have voter cards that specify their area of residence, a requirement to elect local and regional councillors. South West Africa People's Organization
The South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO ; , SWAVO; , SWAVO), officially known as the SWAPO Party of Namibia, is a political party and former independence movement in Namibia (formerly South West Africa). Founded in 1960, it has been the governing party in Namibia since the country achieved independence in 1990. The party continues to be dominated in number and influence by the Ovambo ethnic group. SWAPO held a two-thirds majority in parliament from 1994 to 2019. In the general election held in November 2019, the party won 65.5% of the popular vote and 63 out of the 104 seats in the National Assembly. It also holds 28 out of the 42 seats in the National Council. Namibia held elections for their local and regional councils on 27 November 2015. Ballots were cast using electronic voting. Electoral system Elections to regional councils are held using the first-past-the-post electoral system. Voters in each constituency elect one councillor to represent them on their regional council. Local authority councillors are elected by a system of proportional representation. Results Regional and local elections taken together elected 199 women out of the 499 available seats, partly because affirmative action for women is required by law in local authority elections.
