Hellmuth Heye
Hellmuth Guido Alexander Heye (9 August 1895 – 10 November 1970) was a German admiral in World War II and politician in post-war Germany. He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross of Nazi Germany. Naval career Heye graduated from high school in Berlin in early 1914 and immediately joined the Imperial Navy. From April 1939 to September 1940 he commanded the Heavy Cruiser ''Admiral Hipper''. While taking his ship to Trondheim in April 1940 to land invasion troops there (Operation Weserübung), he encountered the British destroyer and sank it. Heye sent a message to the British Admiralty through the Red Cross praising the gallantry of ''Glowworms commander and crew, and this contributed to LtCdr Gerard Roope receiving the earliest Victoria Cross of World War II, although the award was not made until 1945. Hellmuth Hirth
Hellmuth Hirth (; 24 April 1886 – 1 July 1938) was a German engineer who founded the Mahle GmbH and Hirth companies, manufacturing engine components and complete aircraft engines respectively. Biography Hirth was born in Heilbronn, the son of engineer and tool-maker Albert Hirth. He was the elder brother of Wolf Hirth who would go on to become a famous sailplane designer and manufacturer. As a young man, Hirth was sent to the United States to train with the Edison General Electric Company as a mechanic. While abroad, he developed an interest in aircraft, and on his return to Germany in 1909 became involved with the emerging industry. He built his own aircraft in 1910 and soon went to work for the Zeppelin Company building airships. He also became a prominent pilot. Hellmuth Karasek (4 January 1934 – 29 September 2015) was a German journalist, literary critic, novelist, and the author of many books on literature and film. He was one of Germany's best-known feuilletonists. Biography Karasek was born in the capital city of Moravia, Brno (), which was then a part of Czechoslovakia (current-day Czech Republic). Karasek attended the National Political Institutes of Education in Loben. In 1944, when he was ten, his family fled from Bielitz (today Bielsko in Poland) in the neighbouring German region of Silesia to Bernburg in Saxony-Anhalt. After finishing his schooling in the early 1950s he moved from there—then part of East Germany—to West Germany and became a student at the University of Tübingen, where he studied History, German and English language and literature. Early life Hellmuth Mäder was a native of Rotterode, Thuringia, which at the time of his birth was in the Province of Hesse-Nassau, German Empire. On April 1, 1928, Mäder joined the German police as an officer candidate, attending the Bonn State Police Academy, the State Police School for Weapons and Physical Training in Spandau near Berlin, the Eiche Higher State Police School, and the School for Technology and Transport in Berlin-Tempelhof. Hellmuth Reymann (24 November 1892 – 8 December 1988) was an officer in the German Army ('' Heer'') during World War II. He was one of the last commanders of the Berlin Defence Area during the final assault by Soviet forces on Berlin. World War II From 1 October 1942 to 1 October 1943, Reymann commanded the 212th Infantry Division as part of Army Group North. From 1 October 1943 to 1 April 1944, he commanded the 13th Air Force Field Division. Reymann's division suffered heavy losses in the retreat from Leningrad and was disbanded in April 1944. Hellmuth Walter (26 August 1900 – 16 December 1980) was a German engineer who pioneered research into rocket engines and gas turbines. His most noteworthy contributions were rocket motors for the Messerschmitt Me 163 and Bachem Ba 349 interceptor aircraft, so-called ''Starthilfe'' jettisonable rocket propulsion units used for a variety of Luftwaffe aircraft during World War II, and a revolutionary new propulsion system for submarines known as air-independent propulsion (AIP). Early life Walter began training as a machinist in 1917 in Hamburg and in 1921 commenced studies in mechanical engineering at the Technische Hochschule in Charlottenburg (now Technische Universität Berlin). Hellmuth Wolff (September 3, 1937 – November 20, 2013) was a Canadian organ builder and the founder of the firm Wolff & Associés. Life Born in Zurich, Switzerland, Wolff apprenticed to Metzler & Söhne in nearby Dietikon. He then worked for Rieger Orgelbau of Schwarzach, Vorarlberg, and Charles Fisk of Gloucester, Massachusetts, before emigrating to Canada in 1963 to be a designer in the new mechanical action department of Casavant Frères of St-Hyacinthe, Quebec.He worked briefly with Karl Wilhelm before establishing his own firm in 1968 in Laval, Quebec. Between 1968 and 2008, Wolff designed, built, and installed fifty instruments in churches, universities, concert halls, and homes across North America. Isaac Hellmuth (December 14, 1819 – 28 May 1901), second Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Huron, was the founder of Huron University College and the University of Western Ontario, one of Canada's leading universities. He was also founder of Hellmuth Ladies' College and Hellmuth Boys' College, both now defunct, formerly of London, Ontario. Biography Isaac was born in Poland in 1819 into a Jewish family and educated at the University of Breslau. His father was a rabbi and he trained to be a rabbi himself. However, intellectual discourse with theologians of other faiths made him question his faith and his father disowned him. He was forced to take his mother’s maiden name. Otto Hellmuth (22 July 1896 – 20 April 1968) was a member of the Nazi Party and the ''Gauleiter'' in Lower Franconia (''Unterfranken'') from 1928 to 1945. Early life Born at Markt Einersheim, during World War I he entered service as a Kriegsfreiwilliger in the Bavarian Army, assigned successively to Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 9, Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 4 and Landwehr-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 8. George Francis Hellmuth (1907–1999) was an American architect based in St. Louis, Missouri. Hellmuth was a native of St. Louis and son of architect George W. Hellmuth. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a bachelor's degree in architecture in 1929 and a master's degree in 1930. He began his career as an architect of the city of St. Louis in 1932, designing civic structures including police stations and bus shelters. He went into private practice in 1949, founding Hellmuth, Yamasaki and Leinweber. In 1954, that firm was succeeded by Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum which became the modern firm HOK, which was, in 2018, the largest U.S.-based architecture-engineering firm.
