Helcionopsis Radiatum
''Helcionopsis radiatum'' is an extinct species of paleozoic monoplacophoran in the family Tryblidiidae. This species was first named as ''Tryblidium radiatum'' and described from Silurian in crystalline limestone of Wialmsudd near Fårösund in Sweden by Gustaf Lindström Gustaf Lindström (27 August 1829 – 16 May 1901) was a Sweden, Swedish paleontologist. He was born in Visby on Gotland. In 1848 he entered Uppsala University, and in 1854 he took his doctor's degree. Having attended a course of lectures in ... in 1884. Lindsröm found only one specimen. Shell description The shell is oval and much elevatedly conical. The greatest height is lying near the middle of the longitudinal axis. The apex is in anterior end, truncated, curved as to lean forwards over the anterior margin of the aperture. The shell between the apex and the margin is consequently much concave. The apertural border is straight and horizontal. The surface is covered by fine, closely packed, radia ...

Helcionopsis Striata
''Helcionopsis striata'' is an extinct species of paleozoic monoplacophoran in the family Tryblidiidae. Shell description The shell is rather strongly convex, acuminate-ovate in outline, broadly and regularly rounded behind, pointed in front where the apex projects slightly beyond the margin of the aperture. The apex is incurved. The surface is marked by distinct, rounded, radiating lines, which in the outer half maintain an approximately equal size through bifurcation. There are about ten lines in 5 mm. The whole surface is with very fine concentric lines. Irregular wrinkles are marking stages of growth at intervals of 1 to 3 mm. The length of the shell is 24.5 mm, width 19 mm and the height of the shell is 4.5 mm. This species is closely related to the Upper Silurian ''Helcionopsis radiatum'', which is a little more convex, the anterior outline blunter and the apex more incurved. Distribution It is rare in the upper beds of the Cincinnati formatio ...

Helcionopsis Subcarinata
''Helcionopsis subcarinata'' is an extinct species of paleozoic monoplacophoran in the family Tryblidiidae. Shell description The shell is small and subovate in outline. The anterior and posterior margins are subequal and sharply rounded in the middle. In the cast the apex is depressed, small and not quite marginal. An obtuse carination extends across the length of the shell. The surface of cast shows remains of very fine radiating lines, that are scarcely visible without a magnifier, and a few obscure lines of growth. The length of the shell is 10 mm, width 8 mm and the height of the shell is 3.5 mm. The height of the apex is 1.5 mm. Ulrich and Scofield collected only two specimens of this species. Both are casts and show impressions of the rostral muscles. One exhibits besides a series of muscular scars similar to those of '' Tryblidium''. They stated: "The lines are converging from them towards the apex are a peculiar feature, though probably of the nat ...

The Paleobiology Database
The Paleobiology Database is an online resource for information on the distribution and classification of fossil animals, plants, and microorganisms. History The Paleobiology Database (PBDB) originated in the NCEAS-funded Phanerozoic Marine Paleofaunal Database initiative, which operated from August 1998 through August 2000. From 2000 to 2015, PBDB received funding from the National Science Foundation. PBDB also received support form the Australian Research Council. From 2000 to 2010 it was housed at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, a cross-disciplinary research center within the University of California, Santa Barbara. It is currently housed at University of Wisconsin-Madison and overseen by an international committee of major data contributors. The Paleobiology Database works closely with the Neotoma Paleoecology Database, which has a similar intellectual history, but has focused on the Quaternary (with an emphasis on the late Pleistocene and Holocen ...

Apex (mollusc)
In anatomy, an apex ( adjectival form: apical) is part of the shell of a mollusk. The apex is the pointed tip (the oldest part) of the shell of a gastropod, scaphopod, or cephalopod. The apex is used in end-blown conches. Gastropods The word "apex" is most often used to mean the tip of the spire of the shell of a gastropod. The apex is the first-formed, and therefore the oldest, part of the shell. To be more precise, the apex would usually be where the tip of the embryonic shell or protoconch is situated, if that is still present in the adult shell (often it is lost or eroded away). Coiled gastropod shells The phrase apical whorls, or protoconch, means the whorls that constitute the embryonic shell at the apex of the shell, especially when this is clearly distinguishable from the later whorls of the shell, otherwise known as the teleoconch. Comparison of the apical part and the whole shell of '' Otukaia kiheiziebisu'': File:Calliostoma kiheiziebisu apex.png File:Calli ...

Edward Oscar Ulrich
Edward Oscar Ulrich (1 February 1857, in Covington, Kentucky – 22 February 1944, in Washington, D.C.) was an invertebrate paleontologist specializing in the study of Paleozoic fossils. Biography Ulrich was educated at Wallace College and the Ohio Medical College. Abandoning the practice of medicine, he became curator of the Cincinnati Society of Natural History in 1877, and later was paleontologist to geological surveys of Illinois, Minnesota, and Ohio, also associate editor for ten years of the ''American Geologist''. Ulrich was a prolific writer, publishing numerous pamphlets on the subject of American paleontology, treating particularly the fossil Bryozoa, Gastropoda, Ostracoda, and Pelecypoda. In 1930 he was awarded the Mary Clark Thompson Medal from the National Academy of Sciences, and he was awarded the Penrose Medal in 1932. In 1926, with Ray S. Bassler, he described the conodont genus ''Ancyrodella'', Legacy An extinct species of graptolite, ''Climacograptus'' ''ul ...

Name Of A Biological Genus
Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms as well as viruses. In the hierarchy of biological classification, genus comes above species and below family. In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus. :E.g. '' Panthera leo'' (lion) and '' Panthera onca'' (jaguar) are two species within the genus ''Panthera''. ''Panthera'' is a genus within the family Felidae. The composition of a genus is determined by taxonomists. The standards for genus classification are not strictly codified, so different authorities often produce different classifications for genera. There are some general practices used, however, including the idea that a newly defined genus should fulfill these three criteria to be descriptively useful: # monophyly – all descendants of an ancestral taxon are grouped together (i.e. phylogenetic analysis should clearly demo ...
