Heinrich Lauenstein
Heinrich Lauenstein (26 September 1835, Hüddessum, near Hildesheim - 16 May 1910, Düsseldorf) was a German painter and art professor; associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. He specialized in portraits, many of them of children, and religious scenes. Life and work His father, Christoph Lauenstein, was a mill owner in Hildesheim. He worked as a decorative painter until 1859 when, thanks to a grant from King George V of Hanover., he was able to enroll at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. There, he studied with Heinrich Mücke, the brothers Andreas and Karl Müller, Karl Ferdinand Sohn and Rudolf Wiegmann. In 1863, he attended history painting classes taught by Eduard Bendemann then, from 1867, studied with the religious painter, Ernst Deger. That same year, he assisted Andreas Müller with murals in the new museum at Sigmaringen Castle. Nazarene Movement
The epithet Nazarene was adopted by a group of early 19th-century German Romantic painters who aimed to revive spirituality in art. The name Nazarene came from a term of derision used against them for their affectation of a biblical manner of clothing and hair style. History In 1809, six students at the Vienna Academy formed an artistic cooperative in Vienna called the Brotherhood of St. Luke or ''Lukasbund'', following a common name for medieval guilds of painters. In 1810 four of them, Johann Friedrich Overbeck, Franz Pforr, Ludwig Vogel and Johann Konrad Hottinger (1788-1827) moved to Rome, where they occupied the abandoned monastery of San Isidoro. They were joined by Philipp Veit, Peter von Cornelius, Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow and a loose grouping of other German-speaking artists. Friedrich Gustav August Julius Philipp Rudolf von Wille, known as Fritz (21 April 1860, Weimar - 16 February 1941, Düsseldorf), was a German landscape painter and art professor; associated with the Düsseldorf School. Biography He was born into a Hessian family that had been raised to the nobility in 1780. His father, August von Wille, and his mother Clara, were both painters. From 1879 to 1882, he attended the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he initially studied with Andreas Müller and Heinrich Lauenstein, then took specialized courses from Peter Janssen. At first, he was heavily influenced by his father's works, and was concerned that the two would become confused; signing his paintings with "Jr.". In the late 1880s, he made numerous trips throughout Germany. In 1885 and 1886, he visited the Italian Riviera. Friedrich Schwinge
Friedrich Wilhelm Andreas Schwinge (30 March 1852, Hamburg - 22 October 1913, Hamburg) was a German landscape and seascape painter; associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Biography He was born to Hermann Diedrich Schwinge, a greengrocer, and his wife, Caroline Maria Dorothea née Hansen. After completing his primary education, he served an apprenticeship as a Woodcutter. He was unable to find suitable work, so he sang and acted in small parts at theaters in Kiel. During his free time, he practiced painting and drawing; copying artworks at the local museum. Later, some of this was done on commission. In 1879, the quality of his work led to his being presented with a stipendium, to cover the cost of formal lessons. Wilhelm Schreuer
Wilhelm Schreuer (28 September 1866, Wesel – 11 November 1933, Düsseldorf) was a German painter; associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Biography His father, Johann Heinrich Schreuer, was a master baker. In 1872, the family moved to Cologne, where his father had bought a bakery. In addition to his professional work, he drew and painted in his spare time. As a result, Wilhelm developed an interest in art, which his family encouraged. Fritz Riess or Rieß (11 July 1922 in Nuremberg – 15 May 1991 in Samedan, Switzerland) was a racing driver from Germany. Meinrad Iten (30 June 1867, Unterägeri – 28 June 1932, Unterägeri) was a Swiss portrait and landscape painter; associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Biography His father, Jakob Josef Iten, a Cooper (profession), cooper by trade, died when Meinrad was only two years old. His mother, Barbara, took him to live with his uncle, Johann Josef Iten. From 1881 to 1883, he attended a Catholic school in Einsiedeln. There, he received his first drawing lessons, and decided to become a church painter. Heinrich Hermanns (19 May 1862 – 21 December 1942, Düsseldorf) was a German lithographer and landscape painter. He was also known for architectural paintings and vedute and was associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule.
