Heike Brehmer
Heike Brehmer (born 5 November 1962) is a German politician of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) who has been serving as member of the Bundestag and former district counselor of the district of Aschersleben-Staßfurt. Early life and career Heike Brehmer was born in Staßfurt. She completed an apprenticeship in gastronomy and afterwards an apprenticeship as a merchant for agriculture and food industry (''Land- und Nahrungsgüterwirtschaft, LNG''). She later qualified to a business administration graduate at a Fachhochschule (FH). From 1990 to 1994, she was a municipality director in Tarthun and from 1994 to 2003 head of the joint administrative office Bördeaue. From 2008 to 2009, she was managing director of the Studentenwerk Magdeburg. Bundestag
The Bundestag (, "Federal Diet (assembly), Diet") is the German Federalism, federal parliament. It is the only federal representative body that is directly elected by the German people. It is comparable to the United States House of Representatives or the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. 2017 German Federal Election
Federal elections were held in Germany on 24 September 2017 to elect the members of the 19th Bundestag. At stake were at least 598 seats in the Bundestag, as well as 111 overhang and leveling seats determined thereafter. The Christian Democratic Union of Germany and the Christian Social Union of Bavaria (CDU/CSU), led by incumbent chancellor Angela Merkel, won the highest percentage of the vote with 33%, though it suffered a large swing against it of more than 8%. The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) achieved its worst result since post-war Germany at 21%. Alternative for Germany (AfD), which was previously unrepresented in the Bundestag, became the third party in the Bundestag with 12.6% of the vote, whilst the Free Democratic Party (FDP) won 10.7% of the vote and returned to the Bundestag after losing all their seats in 2013. Recognition Of Same-sex Unions In Germany
Same-sex marriage in Germany has been legal since 1 October 2017. A bill for the legalisation of same-sex marriage passed the Bundestag on 30 June 2017 and the Bundesrat on 7 July. It was signed into law on 20 July by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and published in the '' Federal Law Gazette'' on 28 July 2017. Previously, the governing CDU/CSU had refused to legislate on the issue of same-sex marriage. In June 2017, Chancellor Angela Merkel unexpectedly said she hoped the matter would be put to a conscience vote in the Bundestag in the near future. Federal Agency For Civic Education
The Federal Agency for Civic Education (FACE, german: Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (''bpb'')) is a German federal government agency responsible for promoting civic education. It is subordinated to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community. Thomas Krüger has served as President of the agency since 2000. The modern agency was established in West Germany in 1952 by the Adenauer government to counteract communism during the Cold War, but it has its roots in earlier government agencies dating back to the First World War.
