Independent Record Label
An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME. The labels and artists are often represented by trade associations in their country or region, which in turn are represented by the international trade body, the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN). Many of the labels started as producers and distributors of specific genres of music, such as jazz music, or represent something new and non-mainstream, such as Elvis Presley in the early days. Indies release rock, soul, R&B, jazz, blues, gospel, reggae, hip hop, and world music. Music appearing on indie labels is often referred to as indie music, or more specifically by genre, such as indie hip-hop. L'Altra
L'Altra is an indie rock/ electronic/ chamber pop band from Chicago, Illinois. Bio L'Altra is an indie rock/electronic band consisting of principle songwriters Joseph Desler Costa and Lindsay Anderson joined by drummer Charles Rumback and guitarist Alessandro Baris. The band is currently split between Chicago, IL and Brooklyn, NY. History L'Altra formed in 1999 in Chicago with original members Ken Dyber, Eben English, Lindsay Anderson, and Joseph Desler Costa. Marc Hellner of Pulseprogramming was also a regular contributor. The band's name is Italian or Català and means "the eminineother" or "other woman.". The band released an EP and two records with Aesthetics Records before English and Dyber left the band. The band continued with Costa and Anderson as a songwriting duo and relying on a loose collective of Chicago based musicians and friends. Spanova is a Japanese music duo formed by Ken and Shin Tasaki. The brothers started composing and playing instruments together from the very early age, absorbing every kinds of music they were exposed; from 1970s an 1980s Pop and Rock as they always enjoyed on the radio; to Jazz, Soul, Bossa Nova, Hip-Hop, and Modern Music as they get fascinated by the sounds from the unknown world. Phil Ranelin
Phil Ranelin (born May 25, 1939) is an American jazz and experimental music trombonist. Career Ranelin was born in Indianapolis and lived in New York City before moving to Detroit in the 1960s. He played as a session musician on many Motown recordings, including with Stevie Wonder. In 1971, he and Wendell Harrison formed a group called The Tribe, which was an avant-garde jazz ensemble devoted to black consciousness. Alongside it he co-founded Tribe Records. He released several albums as a leader in the 1970s, and continued with The Tribe project until 1978. Following this, Ranelin worked with Freddie Hubbard. Ranelin worked mostly locally in Detroit in the following decades, and did not find widespread acceptance among jazz aficionados. However, he eventually came to the attention of rare groove collectors who became increasingly interested in his work.
