Hedorah
, also known as the Smog Monster, is a kaiju monster who first appeared in Toho's 1971 film ''Godzilla vs. Hedorah''. The huge monster was named for , the Japanese word for sludge, slime, vomit or chemical ooze. Overview Whereas Godzilla was a symbol of Japanese concerns over nuclear weapons, Hedorah was envisioned as an embodiment of Yokkaichi asthma, caused by Japan's widespread smog and urban pollution at the time. Director Yoshimitsu Banno stated in an interview that his intention in creating Hedorah was to give Godzilla an adversary who was more than just a "giant lobster" and which represented "the most notorious thing in current society". Kenpachiro Satsuma
, born is a Japanese actor who portrayed Godzilla in the Heisei films, from 1984 to 1995. Born in Kagoshima Prefecture, Satsuma began his acting career in the 1960s with small roles in samurai films. In 1971 he was offered the role of the smog monster antagonist Hedorah in ''Godzilla vs. Hedorah'', opposite Haruo Nakajima as Godzilla. He went on to play Gigan in two further Godzilla films. When Nakajima retired from the Godzilla role in 1972, substitutes were hired between 1973 and 1975 until Satsuma took over permanently in 1984. His portrayal took the character away from the humour of the character's portrayals over the past decades, returning to the more animalistic Godzilla persona of the original 1954 film. Yoshimitsu Banno
was a Japanese film director, best known for the cult-classic ''Godzilla vs. Hedorah'' (1971), which he directed and co-wrote. Banno was a special guest at G-Fest, G-Fest XII in 2005. He was an executive producer on Legendary Pictures's American ''Godzilla'' films, ''Godzilla (2014 film), Godzilla'' (2014), ''Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019 film), Godzilla: King of the Monsters'' (2019), and ''Godzilla vs. Kong'' (2021). Ebirah
is a kaiju film monster taking the form of an enormous monstrous lobster. The name ''Ebirah'' is a portmanteau of the Japanese word for "shrimp" or "lobster" (蝦, ''ebi'') and the -ra ending often appended to the names of kaiju monsters, such as Mothra, Hedorah, Ghidorah, etc. and Godzilla himself (Jp: ''Gojira''). Suruga Bay (駿河湾, ''Suruga-wan'') is a bay on the Pacific coast of Honshū in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
