Heavy Turbulence
''Heavy Turbulence'' is an album by Merl Saunders. His second album, it was recorded in the fall of 1971, and released in February 1972. In the early 1970s, Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia sometimes performed concerts together at small venues in the San Francisco Bay Area. At the time, their band was Garcia's main musical outlet when the Grateful Dead were not on tour. ''Heavy Turbulence'' features their usual band lineup from 1971 – Saunders on keyboards and vocals, Garcia on lead guitar and vocals, Tom Fogerty on rhythm guitar, John Kahn on bass, and Bill Vitt on drums. Saunders' next album, '' Fire Up'', released in 1973, was recorded with the same group of musicians. All of the tracks from ''Heavy Turbulence'' and most of the tracks from ''Fire Up'' were re-released on the 1992 compilation album ''Fire Up Plus''. ''Fire Up Plus'' is an album by Merl Saunders and Friends. It contains most of the songs from two LPs from the early 1970s — '' Heavy Turbulence'', and '' Fire Up''. It was released on CD by Fantasy Records on July 9, 1992. ''Fire Up Plus'' features Merl Saunders on keyboards and vocals, Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead on guitar and vocals, Tom Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival on guitar, John Kahn on bass, and Bill Vitt on drums. ''Heavy Turbulence'' was recorded in the fall of 1971 and released in 1972. All six tracks from that album are included in ''Fire Up Plus''. ''Fire Up'' was recorded between November 1972 and January 1973, and released in 1973. Six of the eight tracks from that album are included in ''Fire Up Plus''. The songs "Charisma (She's Got)" and "Chock-Lite Puddin'" were omitted due to space considerations. Merl Saunders
Merl Saunders (February 14, 1934 – October 24, 2008) was an American multi-genre musician who played piano and keyboards, favoring the Hammond B-3 console organ. Biography Born in San Mateo, California, United States, Saunders attended Polytechnic High School in San Francisco. In his first band in high school was singer Johnny Mathis. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957. He worked as musical director of the Billy Williams Revue and served in a similar capacity in Oscar Brown Jr.'s off-Broadway show, ''Big Time Buck White''. He gained notice in the 1970s when he began collaborating with Jerry Garcia, with whom he had begun playing in 1971 at a small Fillmore Street nightclub called The Matrix. He sat in with the Grateful Dead and co-founded the Saunders/Garcia Band which produced three albums and would become the band Legion of Mary, with the addition of Martin Fierro (saxophone), in 1974. "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is a song written by Robbie Robertson. It was originally recorded by his Canadian-American roots rock group The Band in 1969 and released on their eponymous second album. Levon Helm provided the lead vocals. The song is a first-person narrative relating the economic and social distress experienced by the protagonist, a poor white Southerner, during the last year of the American Civil War, when George Stoneman was raiding southwest Virginia. Joan Baez's version peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100 on October 2, 1971; it did likewise on the ''Cashbox'' Top 100 chart. In an orchestra or concert band, it refers to the musicians who play the "French" horn, and in a British-style brass band it is the tenor horn players. Walter Lee Hawkins (May 18, 1949 – July 11, 2010) was an American gospel singer, songwriter, composer, and pastor. An influential figure in urban contemporary gospel music, his career spanned more than four decades. He was consecrated to the bishopric in 2000. Edwin Reuben Hawkins (August 19, 1943 – January 15, 2018) was an American gospel musician, pianist, vocalist, choir master, composer, and arranger. He was one of the originators of the urban contemporary gospel sound.
