Discography
Discography is the study and cataloging of published sound recordings, often by specified artists or within identified music genres. The exact information included varies depending on the type and scope of the discography, but a discography entry for a specific recording will often list such details as the names of the artists involved, the time and place of the recording, the title of the piece performed, release dates, chart positions, and sales figures.Roy Shuker. Popular Music: The Key Concepts'. Routledge, 2005. 80. A discography can also refer to the recordings catalogue of an individual artist, group, or orchestra. This is distinct from a sessionography, which is a catalogue of recording sessions, rather than a catalogue of the records, in whatever medium, that are made from those recordings. The two are sometimes confused, especially in jazz, as specific release dates for jazz records are often difficult to ascertain, and session dates are substituted as a means of organi ...

Smile (Boris Album)
''Smile'' is the fourteenth studio album by Japanese band Boris. It was released through Diwphalanx Records in early 2008 (late 2008 for the live version accordingly), featuring guest musicians Michio Kurihara of Ghost and Stephen O'Malley of Sunn O))), both of whom have collaborated with Boris in the past. Shortly after this initial release, the album was released by American label Southern Lord with a slightly different track listing, different artwork (by Stephen O'Malley), and an almost entirely different sound. The first 3000 copies of this edition include a DVD containing videos for "Statement", "Pink" and "My Neighbor Satan". Notably, this release is the second Boris album to feature vocals on every track (the first, excluding any one-track albums, was '' Amplifier Worship''). Also, it delves more into experimental tendencies with a more manipulated sound, use of drum machines, and even experiments with sampled tracks (notably, "Dead Destination" is essentially "No One ...

W (Boris Album)
''W'' is the twenty-seventh studio album by Japanese experimental band Boris, released 21 January 2022 on the Sacred Bones label. Background ''W'' is intended to be a companion piece to the band's 2020 studio album '' NO'', with the titles of the two albums combining to create the word ''NOW''. Whereas the previous album focused on aggressive hardcore songs, ''W'' focuses on ethereal and ambient compositions to serve as a counterpoint. The two albums are intended to address the conflicts and uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the band describing the project as “a continuous circle of harshness and healing". Several reviewers noticed that ''W'' builds upon the song "Interlude" which closed the previous album, with other reviewers finding connections between various songs on each album. Among recent Boris albums, ''W'' is unusual because guitarist Wata performs all of the lead vocals. Critical reception Upon its release, ''W'' received largely positive revie ...

NO (Boris Album)
''No'' (presented as ''NO'' in conjunction with its follow-up album '' W'') is the twenty-sixth studio album by Japanese experimental band Boris, released 3 July 2020 on the band's label Fangs Anal Satan. Background ''No'' was written and recorded quickly in March 2020 when Boris entered self-isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Inspired by current international political trends, Boris described the album as "a mirror that gathers and reflects people’s negative energy at a different angle, one that is positive. That is the power and potential of the dark, extreme, and brutal noise music that we have experienced up to this point." Unlike the lengthy experimental tracks that dominated the band's last few albums, ''No'' consists mostly of short, hardcore-based songs. It includes the cover song "Fundamental Error" by 1990s Japanese hardcore band Gudon. Japanese hardcore guitarist Katsumi makes a guest appearance. The album was self-released. Composition With ''NO'', Boris cr ...

Third Man Records
Third Man Records is an eclectic, vinyl-focused independent record label founded and owned by Jack White, Ben Blackwell, and Ben Swank. The company operates out of three locations—Nashville, Detroit, and Soho in London—with multiple entities expanding upon the offerings of a traditional record label, including multiple live music venues, vinyl pressing plant, film studio and dark room, guitar pedal and gear company, mastering studio, vinyl subscription service, and a publishing arm. History In 2001, while Jack White was gaining regional notice in the White Stripes in Detroit, he registered the label Third Man Records, proceeding to trademark the name in 2004. It wasn't until 2008 when the White Stripes stopped touring and recording, and after White had reclaimed the rights to the band's earlier music, that White turned his focus to the label. White recruited his nephew, White Stripes archivist and Dirtbombs drummer Ben Blackwell and his lifelong friend, Ben Swank, then ...

Love & Evol
''Love & Evol'' (stylized as ''LφVE & EVφL'') is the twenty-fifth studio album by Japanese experimental band Boris, released 4 October 2019 on Third Man Records. The band describes the release as two distinct but interconnected works, bearing the titles ''LφVE'' and ''EVφL'' respectively, "encapsulating conflicting connotations that interweave and become intricately entangled with one another, gradually eroding before becoming utterly singular." The release was intended to illustrate the different extremes of the sounds Boris has explored previously in their discography, and as a counterpoint to their darker and more aggressive previous album ''Dear''. Composition On ''Love & Evol'', Boris fuses the "deep breath" of "pleasant" ambient rock with "seismic" drone metal. Dream pop and noise elements also show. Critical reception Upon its release, the album received mixed to positive reviews. Thom Jurek of AllMusic called the album "an uneven whole" while "one wishes for more or ...

Dear (Boris Album)
''Dear'' is the twenty-fourth studio album by Japanese experimental band Boris. Released on 14 July 2017 through Sargent House record label, it marks the band's 25th anniversary. The music video for the track "Absolutego", which shares its title with the band's 1996 debut, was also released in May 2017. ''Dear'' was originally planned as a farewell album. Nevertheless, its sessions produced three albums' worth of material: ten tracks were cut for the record and the rest were reserved for future releases. Composition With ''Dear'', Boris craft "straight-down-the-line" doom / stoner rock and "protracted" drone metal. Their sludge heritage also returns. Critical reception Upon its release, ''Dear'' received positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from critics, the album received an average score of 78, which indicates "generally positive reviews", based on 14 reviews. AllMusic critic Thom Jurek wrote: "On ''De ...

Urban Dance
Street dance is an umbrella term for a large number of social dance styles such as: breakdancing, popping, locking, house dance, waacking, voguing, etc. Social dance styles have many accompanying steps and foundations, created organically from a culture, a moment in time, a way of life, influenced by natural social interaction. A street dance is a vernacular dance in an urban context. Vernacular dances are often improvisational and social in nature, encouraging interaction and contact with spectators and other dancers. These dances are a part of the vernacular culture of the geographical area that they come from. History Street dance evolved during the 1970s outside dance studios in any available open space. This includes streets, dance parties, block parties, parks, school yards, raves, and nightclubs. This is partly because African Americans who created the style were generally not accepted into dance studios because of their race. A significant feature of street dance i ...
