Heavens (band)
Heavens was an indie rock band featuring Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio, and Josiah Steinbrick of F-Minus. The duo signed to Epitaph Records and released their debut album, ''Patent Pending'', on September 12, 2006. They spent the 2006 fall season playing the UK and select dates across the US with Darker My Love. Alternative Rock
Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a category of rock music that evolved from the independent music underground of the 1970s. Alternative rock acts achieved mainstream success in the 1990s with the likes of the grunge subgenre in the United States, and the Britpop and shoegaze subgenres in the United Kingdom and Ireland. During this period, many record labels were looking for "alternatives", as many Arena rock, corporate rock, hard rock, and glam metal acts from the 1980s were beginning to grow stale throughout the music industry. The emergence of Generation X as a Culture, cultural force in the 1990s also contributed greatly to the rise of alternative music. "Alternative" refers to the genre's distinction from mainstream or arena rock, commercial rock or pop. Patent Pending (album)
''Patent Pending'' is the only album by Heavens, a side project formed by Matt Skiba, vocalist and guitarist for Alkaline Trio, and Josiah Steinbrick of F-Minus. The duo are accompanied on the album by a number of accomplished musicians, including The Mars Volta's Isaiah "Ikey" Owens. ''Patent Pending'' deviated from the duo's punk background, blending dark, brooding instrumentals with poignant lyrics. The creation of the album began when Skiba moved to Los Angeles and became housemates with Steinbrick. Written primarily in 2004, the album's creation involved a synergistic process with Steinbrick's music laying the foundation for Skiba's lyrics. Producer Ben Lovett and drummer Matthew Compton played key roles in the album's development. The partnership with Epitaph Records for its release was significantly influenced by the label founder's appreciation for the project. An epitaph (; ) is a short text honoring a deceased person. Strictly speaking, it refers to text that is inscribed on a tombstone or plaque, but it may also be used in a figurative sense. Darker My Love
Darker My Love was a psychedelic rock band based in Los Angeles, California. Guitarist/vocalist Tim Presley, a former member of the hardcore punk band the Nerve Agents, formed the band in 2004 with drummer and former Nerve Agents bandmate Andy Granelli, then also of the Distillers. They were joined shortly thereafter by bass guitarist Rob Barbato, who shared songwriting and vocals with Presley, and rhythm guitarist Jared "The Sandwich" Everett. Will Canzoneri joined the band on organ and clavinet in the latter half of 2006. The band released three LPs and one EP. Presley is also a visual artist responsible for much of the band's imagery. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand in the early to mid-1980s. Although the term was originally used to describe rock music released through independent record labels, by the 1990s it became more widely associated with the music such bands produced. Josiah Clark Steinbrick (born July 13, 1981) is an American multi-instrumentalist, composer, and record producer, currently based in Los Angeles, California, United States. Aside from his own solo works and performances with his BANANA ensemble, he has produced albums by Cate Le Bon and Devendra Banhart and has recorded with artists such as Danger Mouse, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Gruff Rhys, Rodrigo Amarante, and Sam Gendel. Matt Skiba
Matthew Thomas Skiba (born February 24, 1976) is an American musician. He is best known as the vocalist and guitarist of the punk rock band Alkaline Trio, and served as the co-lead vocalist and guitarist of Blink-182 from 2015 to 2022. Skiba's lyrical content commonly involves dark romantic themes. Alkaline Trio formed in 1996 with Skiba as the frontman. Since then, the band has released ten full-length albums over two decades. Skiba also recorded albums with side projects including Heavens (band), Heavens and the Hell, as well as two full-length solo albums with his backing band, the Sekrets. Following Tom DeLonge's second departure from in early 2015, Skiba was brought on to fill in for three shows and was later made a full-time member.
