Heather Morris (author)
Heather Morris (born 1953) is a New Zealand author who lives in Australia. Her 2018 debut novel was ''The Tattooist of Auschwitz''. Early life and family Heather Morris was born in 1953 in Te Awamutu in the North Island of New Zealand. She later moved with her family to the town of Pirongia, and graduated from Te Awamutu High School. In interviews, she stated that as a child she knew nothing about the Holocaust. In 1971, she moved to Melbourne; there she met and married Steve Morris in 1973. In 1975, she returned to New Zealand with her husband and settled in Christchurch. Their first son was born in 1976, their second son in 1980, and their daughter in 1985. She began studying at the University of Canterbury in 1986 but returned to Melbourne in 1987 and graduated from Monash University with a BA in Political Science and Sociology in 1991. Lale Sokolov
Ludwig ("Lali" or "Lale") Sokolov ( Eisenberg; 28 October 1916 – 31 October 2006), was an Austro-Hungarian-born Slovak-Australian businessman and Holocaust survivor. Biography Lale Sokolov was born Ludwig Eisenberg on 28 October 1916 in Korompa, Kingdom of Hungary (now Krompachy, Slovakia). In April 1942, he was deported to Auschwitz as part of the Slovak government's participation in the Holocaust. Upon arrival at the extermination camp, he was tattooed with the number 32407. He was set to work constructing housing blocks for the expanding camp but soon became ill with typhus. Having recovered, he was assigned as one of the camp's ''Tätowierer'' ( tattooist). As such, he was part of the Politische Abteilung and had an SS officer assigned to monitor him. His job meant he was "a step further away from death than the other prisoners", and he received a number of benefits such as a single room, extra rations, and free time when his work had been completed. Te Awamutu
Te Awamutu is a town in the Waikato, Waikato region in the North Island of New Zealand. It is the council seat of the Waipā District and serves as a service town for the farming communities which surround it. Te Awamutu is located some south of Hamilton, New Zealand, Hamilton on State Highway 3 (New Zealand), State Highway 3, one of the two main routes south from Auckland and Hamilton.
