''Hearts Are Thumps'' is a 1937 ''Our Gang'' short comedy film directed by Gordon Douglas. It was the 152nd ''Our Gang'' short to be released. An audio clip from the short was included (out of sequence) in the beginning of the song "Tough Guys" by REO Speedwagon, from the album ''Hi Infidelity'' (1980). Plot Spanky, Alfalfa and Buckwheat have no interest in observing Valentine's Day. To prove it, Spanky establishes the He-Man Woman-Haters' Club in order to serve as their united front against the holiday. However, Alfalfa quickly abandons the club when Darla flirtatiously winks at him and proceeds to invite him to lunch to exchange Valentines. Spanky decides to teach his buddy a lesson by slipping soap into Alfalfa's lunch while he and Darla are away. Alfalfa stumbles through lunch as pleasantly as possible without offending Darla. Gordon Douglas (director)
Gordon Douglas Brickner (December 15, 1907 – September 29, 1993) was an American film director and actor, who directed many different genres of films over the course of a five-decade career in motion pictures. Early life Brickner was born in New York City. He began his career as a child actor, appearing in some films directed by Maurice Costello. He also worked at MGM as a book-keeper. Career Hal Roach and ''Our Gang'' As a teenager, Douglas got a job at the Hal Roach Studios, working in the office and appearing in bit parts in various Hal Roach films. He made walk-on appearances in at least three ''Our Gang'' shorts: ''Teacher's Pet (1930 film), Teacher's Pet'' (1930), ''Big Ears (film), Big Ears'' (1931) and ''Birthday Blues'' (1932). Jerry Tucker (November 1, 1925 – November 23, 2016) was an American child actor, most notable for having played the "rich kid" in the ''Our Gang'' short subjects series semi-regularly from 1931 to 1938. Life and career Tucker was born Jerome Harold Schatz in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Ruth (Keno) and Leonard Schatz. His German Jewish surname was changed to "Tucker" for his acting career. Tucker first appeared in the 1931 Our Gang short '' Shiver My Timbers''. He appeared in seventeen ''Our Gang'' comedies through 1938's '' Three Men in a Tub''. In addition to his ''Our Gang'' appearances, Tucker appeared in the Marie Dressler film ''Prosperity'', again as a spoiled rich kid. Harold Frederick Switzer (January 16, 1925 – April 14, 1967) was an American child actor, most notable for appearing in the ''Our Gang'' short subjects series as an extra. He was the older brother of gang member Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer. Early life and family Switzer was born in Paris, Illinois, the first son of George Frederick (1905–1960) and Gladys C. Shanks Switzer (1904–1997). He and younger brother, Carl, became famous around their hometown for their musical talent and performances; both sang and played a number of instruments.
