Head Cut (stream Geomorphology)
In geomorphology, a stream head cut or simply head cut (alternately headcut) is an erosional feature of some intermittent and perennial streams. Headcuts and headward erosion are hallmarks of unstable expanding drainage features such as actively eroding gullies. Headcuts are a type of knickpoint that, as the name indicates, occur at the head (upstream extent) of a channel. The knickpoint, where a head cut begins, can be as small as an overly-steep riffle zone or as a large as a waterfall. When it is not flowing, the head cut will resemble a very short cliff or bluff. Check dams themselves are not a type of new technology; rather, they are an ancient technique dating from the second century AD. A seep or flush is a moist or wet place where water, usually groundwater, reaches the Earth's surface from an underground aquifer. Description Seeps are usually not of sufficient volume to be flowing beyond their immediate above-ground location. They are part of the limnology-geomorphology system. Like a higher volume spring, the water is only from underground sources. Seeps mostly occur in lower elevation areas because water runs downhill, but can happen higher up if the groundwater present is abundant enough. A riffle is a shallow landform in a flowing channel. Colloquially, it is a shallow place in a river where water flows quickly past rocks. However, in geology a riffle has specific characteristics.
