''He Stayed for Breakfast'' is a 1940 American romantic comedy film directed by Alexander Hall, based on the 1934 play ''Ode to Liberty'' by Sidney Howard, itself adapted from the French play ''Liberté provisoire'' by Michel Duran. Plot In Paris, Marianne meets a communist named Paul who is attempting to hide in her apartment to avoid the law. Interested in the man, she lets him take refuge in her place. Marianne soon finds out that Paul attempted to assassinate her banker husband, Maurice. Paul becomes trapped in the apartment due to guards surrounding the building. Paul and Marianne slowly fall in love. Their newfound love becomes endangered when Paul is asked to surrender himself by the communist party he is involved with, but knowing the blame would be placed on Marianne, he refuses. Paul is then shortly after discovered by Marianne's husband, who turns him over to the police. To get the charges dropped, Marianne agrees to stay with her husband, but this does not last long ... Alexander Hall (January 11, 1894 – July 30, 1968) was an American film director, film editor and theatre actor. Biography Hall acted in the theatre from the age of 4 through 1914, when he began to work in silent movies. Following his military service in World War I, he returned to Hollywood and pursued a career in film production. He worked as a film editor and assistant director at Paramount Pictures until 1932, when he directed his first feature film ''Sinners in the Sun''. Vernon Bruce Dent (February 16, 1895 – November 5, 1963) was an American comic actor, who appeared in over 400 films. He co-starred in many short films for Columbia Pictures, frequently as the foil, main antagonist, and an ally to The Three Stooges. Early career In the early 1920s, Dent was a fixture at the Mack Sennett studio, working with comedians Billy Bevan, Andy Clyde, and especially Harry Langdon. William Castle (born William Schloss Jr.; April 24, 1914 – May 31, 1977) was an American film director, producer, screenwriter, and actor. Ernie Adams (born Ernest Stephen Dumarais; June 18, 1885 – November 26, 1947) was an American vaudevillian performer, stage and screen character actor and writer, he appeared primarily in small uncredited parts. Biography Adams was also billed as Ernest S. Adams and Ernie S. Adams. He appeared in vaudeville, theater, and film. He started his career in musical comedy on Broadway theatre.
