Havana Biennial
The Bienal de La Habana was a traditional Latin, Caribbean event, originated in Havana, Havana, Cuba, that aims to raise awareness to promote contemporary art and giving priority to Latin Americans, Latin-American and Caribbean artists. The event was founded in 1984. It takes place in Havana (Cuba) every two years. It principally aims at promoting the developing world in contemporary art circles, giving priority to Latin Americans, Latin American and Caribbean artists, although artists from all over the world submit works. Since its first edition in 1984, the Biennial event has had central themes, among them tradition and contemporary times, challenges, art, society and reflection, man and memory, life with art and urban life. Marta Palau Bosch
Marta Palau Bosch (17 July 1934 – 13 August 2022) was a Spanish-Mexican artist who resided in Mexico. She worked in engraving, painting, sculpture, and most prominently in tapestries, defining herself by her profound artistic use and arrangement of native Mexican natural materials. She was one of the first Mexican artists to focus on themes around women's and immigrants' experiences during the 1970s, especially in her Ilerda series of tapestries and later with her Nahual sculptures. António Ole
António Ole (born 1951) is an Angolan multidisciplinary visual artist, and among the best known in the country. Ole's works, which often center around representing contemporary issues in Angolan society, have received international acclaim for their incorporation of found materials, painting technique, and unique interpretations of recent Post-Colonial history. Ole's first international exhibition was in 1984 at the Los Angeles Museum of African American Art. He has also shown work at the Havana Biennial and Johannesburg Biennial. Manuel Mendive Hoyos (born December 15 in 1944) is an Afro-Cuban artist. Biography Mendive was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1944. His family practiced La Regla de Ocha, or Santería. A mulatto, he cherishes his Yoruba roots from the West coast of Africa. In 1963, he graduated from the San Alejandro Academy of Plastic Arts, Havana. Lani Maestro (born 1957) is a Filipino Canadians, Filipino-Canadian artist who divides her time between France and Canada. She works in installation, sound, video, bookworks and writing.
