Hausa-language cinema, known informally as Kannywood, is the Hausa-language film industry of northern Nigeria. It is based in Kano. Kannywood Kannywood is the sobriquet for Hausa-language cinema. It is a part of the larger Nigerian cinema, known as Nollywood, which includes other production centres producing films in many other Nigerian languages. The name "Kannywood" is a portmanteau derived from the city name of Kano and Hollywood, the center of the American film industry. "Kannywood" was coined in 1999 by Sunusi Shehu Daneji, publisher of ''Tauraruwa ("Star") Magazine'' to capture the growing Hausa video film scene from which point it became the popular reference term for the film industry of Northern Nigeria. Hausa (; / ; Ajami: ) is a Chadic language spoken primarily by the Hausa people in the northern parts of Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Benin and Togo, and the southern parts of Niger, and Chad, with significant minorities in Ivory Coast. A small number of speakers also exist in Sudan. Hausa is a member of the Afroasiatic language family and is the most widely spoken language within the Chadic branch of that family. Despite originating from a non-tonal language family, Hausa utilizes differences in pitch to distinguish words and grammar. ''Ethnologue'' estimated that it was spoken as a first language by some 58 million people and as a second language by another 36 million, bringing the total number of Hausa speakers to an estimated 94 million. Nazifi Abdulsalam Yusuf ( born 2 February 1982) better known as his stage name Nazifi Asnanic () is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, director, and producer. He was born and raised in the ancient city of Kano. Nazifi Asnanic, often referred to as the Golden Voice, is recognized as one of the most successful Hausa artists of all time in the history of Kannywood. He has received a number of awards and nominations including City People Entertainment Awards as the best musician in 2014. He was also among the Kannywood stars that received an award by Zamfara State government of Nigeria for their tremendous effort and contribution toward uniting and sustaining Hausa culture. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje
Abdullahi Umar Ganduje (born 25 December 1949) is a Nigerian politician who served as the governor of Kano State from 2015 to 2023. He previously served as Rabiu Kwankwaso's deputy governor twice, from 1999 to 2003 and from 2011 to 2015. He is a member and national chairman of the ruling Party All Progressives Congress (APC). Background Ganduje was born in 1949 to a Fulani family in the village of Ganduje, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State. He began his early education in a Qur'anic and Islamiyya school at his village, where he was trained in Islamic knowledge. Ibrahim Shekarau
Ibrahim Shekarau (born 5 November 1955) is a former Nigerian minister of education and two-term Governor of Kano State in Nigeria. He was elected in April 2003 and re-elected in April 2007. He is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was one of the candidates who aspired to become president in the Nigerian general elections of 2011. Early life and education Shekarau was born in the Kurmawa quarters of Kano, the son of a police officer. Izala Society or ''Jama'atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah'' (Society for the Removal of ''Bid'ah'' and Re-establishment of the ''Sunnah''), also known as JIBWIS, is a Salafi organization originally established in Northern Nigeria to fight what it sees as the ''Bid'ah'' and '' Shirk'' practiced by the Sufi orders. It is one of the largest Sunni societies in Nigeria, Chad, Ghana, Niger, and Cameroon. Organization JIBWIS was established in 1978 in Jos, Nigeria by Sheikh Isma'ila Idris (1937-2000) in reaction to the Sufi orders, specifically the Qadiriyya and Tijjaniyya who practice Sufism. Umar ibn al-Khattab (; ), also spelled Omar, was the second Rashidun caliph, ruling from August 634 until his assassination in 644.
