Hashknife Hartley
''Hashknife Hartley'' is an American old-time radio Western program. It was broadcast on the Mutual Broadcasting System from July 2, 1950, until December 30, 1951. Schedule ''Hashknife Hartley'' began as a summer replacement series, filling the time slot of ''Juvenile Jury''. Paired with ''Hopalong Cassidy'' in the following half-hour, the substitution gave Mutual a one-hour Western block on Sunday afternoons. In September 1950, the block was extended to 90 minutes when '' Bobby Benson and the B-Bar-B Riders'' was added in the half-hour before ''Hashknife Hartley''. The Mutual Broadcasting System (commonly referred to simply as Mutual; sometimes referred to as MBS, Mutual Radio or the Mutual Radio Network) was an American commercial radio network in operation from 1934 to 1999. It was hosted by Jack Barry and featured a panel of children aged ten or less giving advice to solve the problems of other children. ''Hopalong Cassidy'' is a radio western in the United States, featuring the character Hopalong Cassidy created by writer Clarence E. Mulford. It was syndicated via electrical transcription, beginning in 1948 and continuing into 1950. Its network broadcasts began on Mutual January 1, 1950, and ended on CBS December 27, 1952. Background CBS produced an audition episode of a ''Hopalong Cassidy'' program that was broadcast in the summer of 1941 as part of ''Forecast'', a series of pilots for potential programs. After that, little, if anything, was heard about a ''Hopalong Cassidy'' radio production until five years later. ''Bobby Benson and the B-Bar-B Riders'' is an old-time radio juvenile Western adventure program in the United States, one of the first juvenile radio programs. It was broadcast on CBS October 17, 1932 - December 11, 1936, and on Mutual June 21, 1949 - June 17, 1955. Background ''Bobby Benson'' was created by Herbert C. Rice, who had already originated "dozens of local drama series" as a director at a radio station in Buffalo, New York. In 1932, representatives of the Hecker H-O Company of Buffalo sought to develop a children's radio program for the company's cereal products. Rice associated the "H-O" name with a cattle brand and soon developed a concept about an orphan named Bobby Benson and his guardian, Sunny Jim (an icon used to represent H-O cereals).
