Harvey Veniot

	Harvey Veniot Harvey Alfred Veniot, (November 18, 1915 – October 2, 2009) was a lawyer, judge and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Pictou West in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1956 to 1974 as a Progressive Conservative member. Veniot was born in Pictou, Nova Scotia, the son of Alexander R. Veniot and Gladys Maclean, and was educated at Pictou Academy, St. Francis Xavier University, Dalhousie Law School and the University of Saskatchewan. He was called to the Nova Scotia bar in 1940. Veniot married Rhoda Marion MacLeod in 1944. Political career Veniot served as a town councillor in Pictou from 1945 to 1946. In 1953, he was an unsuccessful candidate for a seat in the provincial assembly, losing to Liberal incumbent Stewart W. Proudfoot by 9 votes. Veniot ran again in the 1956 election, defeating Proudfoot by 88 votes to win the Pictou West riding. In 1958, he was named Queen's Counsel. 	1956 Nova Scotia General Election The 1956 Nova Scotia general election was held on 30 October 1956 to elect members of the 46th House of Assembly of the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada. It was won by the Progressive Conservatives led by Robert Stanfield. This was the first election the Liberals had fought after the death of their longtime charismatic leader, Angus L. Macdonald. Public Health Minister Harold Connolly became interim leader and premier following Macdonald's death in 1954, but was defeated at a leadership convention by Education Minister Henry Hicks. The convention exposed a sharp religious divide in the Liberal Party; Hicks was a Protestant and Connolly was a Catholic. picture info	Pictou Harbour Pictou Harbour is a natural harbour in Nova Scotia on the Northumberland Strait. Geography The distance between the town of Pictou on the north shore, and the community of Pictou Landing to the south is about . The south side of the harbour opens into the broad mouth of the East River of Pictou which flows inland through the towns of Trenton and New Glasgow. The south-west end of the harbour is bisected by the Harvey Veniot causeway that carries Nova Scotia Highway 106. The causeway has limited the navigable portion of the harbour to approximately in length. Prior to the opening of the causeway in 1968, the harbour continued into the confluence of the West River of Pictou and Middle River of Pictou, both of which were navigable. The body of water immediately outside the harbour is known as the Pictou Road. The entrance to the harbour is protected by two sandbars and is about 400m wide. The provincial government named the highway the Jubilee Highway on December 21, 2012 in honour of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. The highway is part of the Prince Edward Island loop of the Trans-Canada Highway and connects the Northumberland Ferries terminal in Caribou in the north with the mainline Trans-Canada at Highway 104 near Mount William in the south, east of New Glasgow.
