Harvard Islands
The Harvard Islands () are an island group east of Qaanaaq in the Avannaata Municipality, northwestern Greenland. They are located near the head of the Inglefield Fjord, north of the mouth of the Academy Fjord and just east of the terminus of the Heilprin Glacier. Municipalities Of Greenland
Greenland is divided into five municipalities and two unincorporated areas. Avannaata
Avannaata (, ) is a municipality of Greenland created on 1 January 2018 from the bulk of the former Qaasuitsup municipality. It encompasses an area of 522,700 km2 and has 10,726 inhabitants. Geography In the south, Avannaata is flanked by the Qeqertalik municipality. In the southeast, it is bordered by the Sermersooq municipality; the border runs north–south ( 45° West meridian) through the center of the Greenland ice sheet (), so is free of traffic. In the east and northeast it is bordered by the Northeast Greenland National Park. Pituffik Space Base is an enclave on the Avannaata coast that is administered by the United States Space Force. At the southern end of the municipal coastline are the waters of Disko Bay, although some Disko Bay communities belong to the municipality of Qeqertalik. Greenlandic Inuit
The Greenlandic Inuit or sometimes simply the Greenlandic are an ethnic group and nation Indigenous peoples of the Americas, indigenous to Greenland, where they constitute the largest ethnic population. Qaanaaq
Qaanaaq (), formerly known as New Thule, is the main town in the northern part of the Avannaata municipality in northwestern Greenland. The town has a population of 646 as of 2020. The population was forcibly relocated from its former, traditional home, which was expropriated for the construction of a United States Air Force base (Thule Air Base, now Pituffik Space Base) in 1953. The inhabitants of Qaanaaq speak the local Inuktun language and many also speak Kalaallisut and Danish. Qaanaaq is one of the northernmost towns in the world. Within Greenland, it is the northernmost major town and the third northernmost public settlement, after nearby Qeqertat and Siorapaluk. Inglefield Fjord
Inglefield Gulf or Inglefield Fjord (; ) is a fjord in northwestern Greenland. To the west, the fjord opens into the Baffin Bay. Administratively it belongs to the Avannaata municipality. Inglefield Gulf was named after English explorer Edward Augustus Inglefield. Settlements Qaanaaq is located in the northern entrance of the fjord. Academy Fjord
Academy Fjord or Academy Bay () is a fjord in northern Greenland. Administratively it belongs to the Avannaata municipality. The fjord was named by Robert Peary after the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences. Geography The Academy Fjord opens to the northwest into the inner end of the Inglefield Gulf, close to its head and south of the Harvard Islands. The fjord is bordered on both sides by unglaciated plateaux reaching approximately . The northeastern one, Nunatarsuaq, is a nunatak dotted with lakes. The southwestern side of the fjord is fringed by a continuous wall of almost vertical cliffs extending from a promontory at the mouth of the fjord beyond the head into the glacier area. Heilprin Glacier
Heilprin Glacier (), is a glacier in northwestern Greenland. Administratively it belongs to the Avannaata municipality. Qeqertat
Qeqertat is a small village in the Qaanaaq area of the Avannaata municipality, in northern Greenland. It is located on the Harvard islands, in the inner Inglefield Fjord, approximately east of Qaanaaq. The village had 23 inhabitants in 2020. It is one of the most northern settlements in Greenland and in the world. Qeqertat means "the islands" in the Inuit language. The local economy relies heavily on traditional Inuit hunting for narwhal, seals, and walrus. Qeqertat is also known as a good place for halibut fishing, with the largest and most abundant Greenland halibut found in the fjord nearby. The town has no independent water supply. Instead, the townsfolk must get their water from nearby rivers and lakes, or, in winter, collect sea ice to melt.
