Harshana Nanayakkara
Harshana Nanayakkara is a Sri Lankan former film actor, lawyer, and politician currently serving as the Minister of Justice (Sri Lanka), Minister of Justice and National Integration of the Government of Sri Lanka since November 2024. He is a Member of Parliament (Sri Lanka), member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka from Colombo Electoral District since November 2024 as a member of the National People's Power. He is also a national executive committee Member of NPP. Minister Nanayakkara has stated that he intends to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act (Sri Lanka), Prevention of Terrorism Act and replace it with a new law. Personal life His father Yasapalitha Nanayakkara was a popular director in Sri Lankan cinema and stage drama as well as a screenwriter, producer, lyricist and actor. 2020 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Sri Lanka on 5 August 2020 to elect 225 members to Sri Lanka's 16th Parliament. 16,263,885 people were eligible to vote in the election, 31.95% of whom were young voters. Prevention Of Terrorism Act (Sri Lanka)
The Prevention of Terrorism Act of 1978 is a law in Sri Lanka. It provides the police with broad powers to search, arrest, and detain suspects. It was first enacted as a temporary law in 1979 under J. R. Jayewardene presidency, then made permanent in 1982. Elements of the Act Under the PTA of Sri Lanka, a person can be detained for periods up to 18 months (renewable by order every three months amended as 12 months in 2022) if the Minister has reason to believe or suspect that any person is connected with or concerned in any unlawful activity. Offences not known to ordinary laws of the country were also introduced. For example, if a person knows the whereabouts of terrorist (“terrorist” not defined in the Act) and if such person fails to inform the police, he commits an offence punishable with a minimum 5-year jail term.
