Harry Wasylyk
Harry Wasylyk Sr. (November 1904 - Sept, 1995) was a Canadian inventor from Winnipeg, Manitoba, who together with Larry Hansen of Lindsay, Ontario, invented the disposable polyethylene garbage bag in 1950. Garbage bags were first intended for commercial use rather than home use – the bags were first sold to the Winnipeg General Hospital Winnipeg General Hospital is a hospital that was founded in 1872 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was built on the estate of Andrew McDermot. The driving force behind the hospital was McDermott's son-in-law Andrew Bannatyne Andrew Graham Ballenden Banna .... However, Hansen worked for the Union Carbide Company in Lindsay, which bought the invention from Wasylyk and Hansen. Union Carbide manufactured the first green garbage bags, marketed under the name Glad garbage bags for home use in the late 1960s. Lindsay, Ontario
Lindsay is a community of 22 367 people ( 2021 census) on the Scugog River in the Kawartha Lakes region of south-eastern Ontario, Canada. It is approximately west of Peterborough. It is the seat of the City of Kawartha Lakes (formerly Victoria County), and the hub for business and commerce in the region. History The Township of Ops was surveyed in 1825 by Colonel Duncan McDonell, and Lots 20 and 21 in the 5th Concession were reserved for a town site. The same year settlers began to come to the region, and by 1827, the Purdys, an American family, built a dam on the Scugog River at the site of present-day Lindsay. The following year they built a sawmill, and in 1830, a grist mill was constructed. A small village grew up around the mills, and it was known as Purdy's Mills. In 1834, surveyor John Huston plotted the designated town site into streets and lots. The Glad Products Company is an American company specializing in trash bags and plastic food storage containers. History The Glad brand originated in the United States in 1963 when Union Carbide owner and CEO, David Darroch, launched Glad Wrap, a polyethylene film used as a food wrap. Douglas G. Taylor was transferred that same year from the Union Carbide facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to spearhead the Glad Wrap project. Taylor headed sales and marketing for Glad products until he was retired from Union Carbide in 1985 after putting together the sale of Union Carbide's Home and Automotive Products division to First Brands Corporation. At the time of the sale, Taylor was Senior Vice President of the Home and Automotive Products division as well as the head of STP brands. He died in Hilton Head, South Carolina on August 13, 1996.
