Harry Johnson (bartender)
Harry Johnson was an American bartender who owned and operated saloons across the US in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. He is best known for the ''New and Improved Bartenders' Manual'', an influential book that contained many original cocktail recipes, as well as the first written recipes of such cocktails as the marguerite and a version of the martini. Perhaps even more importantly, it was the first book to offer bar management instructions. Johnson opened the first ever consulting agency for bar management. '' Imbibe'' magazine has called him one of the most influential cocktail personalities of the last 100 years, and he has been called "the father of professional bartending". Martini (cocktail)
The martini is a cocktail made with gin and vermouth, and garnished with an olive, a lemon twist, or both. Over the years, the martini has become one of the best-known mixed alcoholic beverages. A common variation, the vodka martini, uses vodka instead of gin for the cocktail's base spirit. Preparation By 1922, the martini reached its most recognizable form in which London dry gin and dry vermouth are combined at a ratio of 2:1, stirred in a mixing glass with ice cubes, with the optional addition of orange or aromatic bitters, then strained into a chilled cocktail glass. Jeremiah P. Thomas (October 30, 1830 – December 15, 1885) was an American bartender who owned and operated saloons in New York City. Great Chicago Fire
The Great Chicago Fire was a conflagration that burned in the American city of Chicago, Illinois during October 8–10, 1871. The fire killed approximately 300 people, destroyed roughly of the city including over 17,000 structures, and left more than 100,000 residents homeless. The fire began in a neighborhood southwest of the city center. A long period of hot, dry, windy conditions, and the wooden construction prevalent in the city, led to the conflagration spreading quickly. The fire leapt the south branch of the Chicago River and destroyed much of central Chicago and then crossed the main stem of the river, consuming the Near North Side. Help flowed to the city from near and far after the fire. The city government improved building codes to stop the rapid spread of future fires and rebuilt rapidly to those higher standards. A Tom and Jerry is a traditional Christmas-time cocktail in the United States, sometimes attributed to British writer and boxing journalist Pierce Egan in the 1820s. Bijou (cocktail)
A bijou is a mixed alcoholic drink composed of gin, vermouth, and Chartreuse. This cocktail was invented by Harry Johnson, "the father of professional bartending", who called it ''bijou'' because it combined the colors of three jewels: gin for diamond, vermouth for ruby, and Chartreuse for emerald. An original-style bijou is made stirred with ice as Johnson's 1900 ''New and Improved Bartender Manual'' states "mix well with a spoon and serve." This recipe is also one of the oldest in the manual, dating back to the 1890s. The bijou was popular for several decades. Unlike the Manhattan and the martini, however, the bijou disappeared after Prohibition. It was rediscovered by "the King of Cocktails" Dale DeGroff in the 1980s, when he stumbled upon the recipe in Johnson's book.
