Harry J. Aleo
Harry J. Aleo (December 7, 1919 – June 21, 2008) was an American businessman and owner of Thoroughbred racehorses. Early life Born in Noe Valley, San Francisco, California, he was a lifelong resident of San Francisco. Aleo graduated from Mission High School. He signed a minor-league contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers, but ended his baseball career in 1940 after injuring his elbow. Career During World War II, he served overseas with the United States Army, where among his campaigns he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. At war's end, Aleo returned home and founded Twin Peaks Properties, a real estate and insurance brokerage firm he owned and operated until his death. In 1979, he became involved in the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing. Throughout his more than two decades in racing, his only trainer was Greg Gilchrist. Noe Valley, San Francisco, California
Noe Valley ( ; originally spelt Noé) is a neighborhood in the central part of San Francisco, California. It is named for Don José de Jesús Noé, noted 19th-century Californio statesman and ranchero, who owned much of the area and served as mayor. Location Roughly speaking, Noe Valley is bounded by 21st Street to the north, 30th Street to the south, San Jose Ave and Guerrero Street to the east, and Grand View Avenue and Diamond Heights Blvd to the west. The American Champion Sprint Horse award is an American Thoroughbred horse racing honor. Created in 1947, in 1971 it became part of the Eclipse Awards program and is awarded annually to the top horse in sprint races (usually those run at a distance of under one mile). The ''Daily Racing Form'' (DRF) began naming an annual sprint champion in 1947. Starting in 1950, the Thoroughbred Racing Associations (TRA) began naming its own champion. The following list provides the name of the horses chosen by these organizations. The ''Daily Racing Form'', the Thoroughbred Racing Associations, and the National Turf Writers Association all joined forces in 1971 to create the Eclipse Award. The Eclipse Award is an American Thoroughbred horse racing award named after the 18th-century British racehorse and sire, Eclipse. An Eclipse Award Trophy is presented to the winner in each division that is made by a few small selected American foundries with expertise in studio bronze casting. It is then mounted on the hand-crafted native Kentucky walnut base to comprise the Eclipse Award on which a brass plate recites the award winner. Lost in the Fog (February 4, 2002 – September 17, 2006) was an American thoroughbred race horse. He won his first 10 starts (including two Breeders' Cup stakes), 11 of his 14 lifetime starts across the country, and career earnings of $978,099. He died of lymphoma during his four-year-old season, and his remains were buried at Golden Gate Fields next to Silky Sullivan. Bloodlines Bred by Susan Seper and foaled in Florida, his sire was Lost Soldier, (sire of 10 stakes winners and son of Danzig, who was the son of Northern Dancer—ranked #43 by The Blood-Horse in their top 100 U.S. thoroughbred champions of the 20th Century).
