Harry F. Stimpson Jr.
Harry Farnum Stimpson Jr. (October 16, 1913 – April 17, 2005) was an American lawyer who was the United States' ambassador to Paraguay from 1959 to 1961. Biography Early life Harry was born on October 16, 1913, as the second son of Harry Farnum Simpson Sr. and his wife Francis Maude Greenway. He studied at Noble and Greenough School, Harvard University, and University of Virginia School of Law, graduating at all of those. Political career and marriage On 27 June 1942, Harry married Margaret Lewis Bird in Virginia. From 1953 to 1954, he was the secretary for the governor of Massachusetts. On 27 August 1959, Harry was nominated by Dwight D. Eisenhower to be the United States' ambassador to Paraguay, also becoming an assistant to Christian Herter, the Secretary of State at the time. The 1962 United States House of Representatives elections was an election for the United States House of Representatives in 1962, which occurred in the middle of President John F. Kennedy's term. As in most midterm elections, Kennedy's Democratic Party lost seats to the opposition Republican Party, but retained a majority. House Democrats were expected to lose their majority, but the resolution over the Cuban Missile Crisis just a few weeks prior led to a rebound in approval for the Democrats under President Kennedy. The number of seats up for election went back to 435, in accordance with reapportionment resulting from the 1960 census. The membership had been increased temporarily to 437 in 1959, providing 1 seat each for the new states of Alaska and Hawaii, while the other 435 seats continued with the reapportionment resulting from the 1950 census. Christian Archibald Herter (March 28, 1895December 30, 1966) was an American diplomat and Republican politician who was the 59th Governor of Massachusetts from 1953 to 1957 and United States Secretary of State from 1959 to 1961. His moderate tone of negotiations was confronted by the intensity of Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in a series of unpleasant episodes that turned the Cold War even colder in 1960–61.
