Harry Cotterell
Harry Cotterell (30 December 1841 September 1923) was a British trader who was chairman of African Association Ltd, an amalgamation of 8 British merchant firms operating in the Oil Rivers Protectorate. Background Born in 1841 in Newbury, Berkshire before relocating to Liverpool with his family aged 9, Cotterell came from modest means and had little education. At the age ten, he began work at a succession of jobs, before becoming a cabin boy, crossing the Atlantic several times. In January 1863, he was a cabin steward on a ship that was owned by a Liverpool merchant firm which was leaving for Oil Rivers. At Oil Rivers, he persuaded the local agent of the Liverpool firm to retain him at Bonny. After spending three years at Kingdom of Bonny, Bonny, Cotterell was earning income with a share of profits, he also had some success singing at parties. Oil Rivers Protectorate
The Niger Coast Protectorate was a British protectorate in the Oil Rivers area of present-day Nigeria, originally established as the Oil Rivers Protectorate in 1884 and confirmed at the Berlin Conference the following year. It was renamed on 12 May 1893, and merged with the chartered territories of the Royal Niger Company on 1 January 1900 to form the Southern Nigeria Protectorate. Kingdom Of Bonny
The Kingdom of Bonny, otherwise known as Grand Bonny, is a traditional state based on the town of Bonny in Rivers State, Nigeria. In the pre-colonial period, it was an important slave trading port, later trading palm oil products. During the 19th century the British became increasingly involved in the internal affairs of the kingdom, in 1886 assuming control under a protectorate treaty. Today the King of Bonny has a largely ceremonial role. Introduction Bonny Kingdom was founded by Ndoli, a man from the Isedani lineage of Kolokuma in the Ebeni-toru region (in the present day Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The Kingdom was founded before or about 1000 AD. Its modern name, "Bonny", is a corruption of the original ''Ubani''. An alternative name, ''Okoloama'' (lit. John Holt (businessman)
John Holt (31 October 1841 – 22 June 1915) was an English merchant, who founded a shipping line operating between Liverpool and West Africa, and a number of businesses in Nigeria, which are now incorporated in John Holt plc. Started apprenticeship in 1857. Life Holt was born in Garthorpe, Lincolnshire in 1841 to the family of Thomas Godfrey Holt. In 1857, he began an apprenticeship with the firm of William and Hamilton Laird, a family business that was engaged in trade with West Africa through their agency with the African Steam Ship Company, founded by Macgregor Laird. During his time with the firm, Alfred Jones who later managed a shipping business with trade routes to West Africa was also working there. Holt's work with the Laird brothers introduced him to opportunities in West Africa that had arisen in the aftermath of the abolition of slavery.
