Harry Barnes (artist)
Sir Harry Barnes (3 April 1915 - 31 May 1982) was an artist; and former Director of the Glasgow School of Art. He took the post of Director in 1964. Life Barnes was originally from Sheffield and his father was a professor at the university there.Glasgow School of Art, The History. Hugh Ferguson. Foulis Press. 1995. His old teacher at Slade Art College, Randolph Schwabe, recommended him to Glasgow School of Art in 1944. Barnes had married Schwabe's daughter in 1941. Randolph Schwabe was a close friend of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, and his daughter Alice was a favourite of theirs. With Barnes ties to the school and now connection to the Mackintoshes he became versed in the School and Mackintosh's work. He stayed at Helensburgh in Argyll. Harry Wilson Barnes (August 19, 1915 – December 3, 1993), nicknamed "Mooch", was an American Negro league catcher in the 1930s and 1940s. A native of Highland Home, Alabama, Barnes made his major league debut with the Birmingham Black Barons in 1937, and went on to play for the Atlanta Black Crackers and Memphis Red Sox. He died in Birmingham, Alabama in 1993 at age 78. Harold Barnes (born 22 July 1936) is an English politician who was the Labour Party Member of Parliament for North East Derbyshire from 1987 to 2005. Life and career Born in Easington, County Durham, Barnes was educated at Ruskin College in Oxford and the University of Hull. He was elected to Parliament in the 1987 election. Barnes stood down at the May 2005 general election, and was succeeded by Natascha Engel. Political Positions Barnes was considered to be on the left of the party, and as a member of the Socialist Campaign Group (SCG) he voted against Tony Blair's leadership on a number of issues. However, unlike other members of the SCG he was not an advocate of the Troops out movement (from Northern Ireland). Major Harry Barnes (5 December 1870 – 12 October 1935) was a radical United Kingdom Liberal Party politician, architect and author specialising in housing and town planning. He first stood for parliament in 1918 when he was selected as the Liberal candidate for Newcastle upon Tyne East. He had served as a Major in the Northumberland Fusiliers Voluntary Regiment. He had been the District Valuer for Newcastle upon Tyne from 1916–1918, so knew the town well. The seat was a newly created constituency and his prospects of winning were helped when no Unionist opponent came forward and he was endorsed by the Coalition Government led by David Lloyd George; Despite being elected as a supporter of the government, Barnes resigned the Coalition Liberal Whip in November 1919 to take the opposition Liberal Whip. Harry Elmer Barnes (June 15, 1889 – August 25, 1968) was an American historian who, in his later years, was known for his historical revisionism and Holocaust denial. After receiving a PhD at Columbia University in 1918 Barnes became a professor of history at Clark University before moving to Smith College as a professor of historical sociology in 1923. In 1929 he left teaching to work as a journalist, freelance writer and occasional adjunct professor at smaller schools. Harold Paul Barnes (12 May 1935 – 5 November 2016), better known as "Johnny Sombrero", was a Canadian outlaw biker and gangster who was the founder and leader of the Black Diamond Riders Motorcycle Club of Toronto. Early life Barnes was born in the Junction district in Toronto, the son of a British father and an Italian mother. His father, a working class Englishman from Carlisle in the north of England, was a quiet, reserved man while his dominating mother, a Calabrian woman from Siderno, ruled the household. Harrison Bryce Jordan Barnes (born May 30, 1992) is an American professional basketball player for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the North Carolina Tar Heels before being selected by the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 2012 NBA draft with the seventh overall pick.
