Harrow, Victoria
Harrow is a town in the Wimmera region of western Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of West Wimmera Local government in Australia, local government area, 391 kilometres north west of the state capital Melbourne, overlooking the Glenelg River (Victoria), Glenelg River valley. At the 2021 Australian census, Harrow and the surrounding area had a population of 184 with a median age of 49. In agriculture, a harrow is a farm implement used for surface tillage. It is used after ploughing for breaking up and smoothing out the surface of the soil. The purpose of harrowing is to break up clods and to provide a soil structure, called tilth, that is suitable for planting seeds. Coarser harrowing may also be used to remove weeds and to cover seed after sowing. Harrows differ from ploughs, which cut the upper 12 to 25 centimetre (5 to 10 in) layer of soil, and leave furrows, parallel trenches. Harrows differ from cultivators in that they disturb the whole surface of the soil, while a cultivator instead disturbs only narrow tracks between the crop rows to kill weeds. Battle Of The Harrow
The Battle of the Harrow took place on 26 May 1798 and was the first clash of the Irish Rebellion of 1798 in County Wexford. It was fought between government forces (specifically a unit of Wexford yeoman cavalry, the Camolin Cavalry) and United Irishmen insurgents under the leadership of a local priest, John Murphy who had mobilized following reports of atrocities by the yeomanry during the rebellion led by the United Irishmen revolutionary organisation. Background News of the outbreak of the rebellion to the north had filtered down to County Wexford and was accompanied by the arrival of two military regiments notorious for their brutality: the Royal North Cork Militia and a Welsh fencible cavalry unit known as the Ancient Britons. Harrow History Prize
The Harrow History Prize or the Townsend Warner Preparatory Schools History Prize is an annual history competition for children at British preparatory schools. It currently attracts around 800 entrants each year. History The prize was established in 1885 by E. E. Bowen, a housemaster at Harrow School. He wanted to encourage a move away from purely classical education and offered a prize in history to pupils of Elstree Preparatory School. In 1895 the Dragon School also started to take part, and the competition had spread to thirteen other schools by 1905 with 39 entrants taking part that year. In 1905, George Townsend Warner, head of history at Harrow (and father of Sylvia Townsend Warner), took on the running of the competition until his death in 1916.
