Harriet C. McCabe
Harriet Calista Clark McCabe (January 19, 1827 – September 25, 1919) was an American pioneer in women's work for temperance and home missions. She took a responsible position in the formation of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) in the period immediately following the Women's Crusade. She was the first president of the Ohio WCTU; she gave the organization its name, and drafted its Constitution. McCabe favored equal suffrage. Early life and education Harriet Calista Clark was born in Sidney, New York, January 19, 1827. Her parents were Arvine and Eliza F. (Clark) Clark. They were devout members of the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC). McCabe was reared on a farm. Until the age of 12, she was educated either in the district school or by private governess. Diocletian Lewis (March 3, 1823 – May 21, 1886), commonly known as Dr. Dio Lewis, was a prominent Temperance movement, temperance leader and physical culture advocate who practiced homeopathy. Biography Early life He was born on a farm near Auburn, New York.This article incorporates text from a publication in the public domain: He left school at 12 to work in a cotton factory. He later worked at a hoe, axe and scythe factory and returned to school. He started teaching school at 15. At 18, he organized a school in Lower Sandusky, Ohio (now Fremont, Ohio, Fremont). He extended the curriculum to include algebra, geometry, Greek and Latin. This so impressed the townsfolk that they constructed a building for the school, and when a certificate of incorporation was obtained for it, they named the school the Diocletian Institute in his honor.
