Harold Austin (actor)
Sir Harold Bruce Gardiner Austin (15 July 1877 – 27 July 1943) was a Barbadian politician and cricketer. He was known as H.B.G.. Austin was the son of John Gardiner Austin, a shipper connected with the sugar trade, and his wife Dorothy and was educated at Harrison College (Barbados), Harrison College, Barbados. He married Lillian Marie Dennehy in St. Lucia in 1904 and had two daughters. Austin was awarded the OBE in 1927, was Knight Bachelor, knighted in 1935. He lost his seat to Charles Duncan O'Neal in 1932 by one vote. Austin was List of speakers of the House of Assembly of Barbados, Speaker of the House of Assembly of Barbados 1934-1937, 1938-1942. Austin captained the West Indian cricket teams that toured Cricket in England, England in 1906 and 1923. He was a right hand batsman and occasional wicket-keeper. Saint Michael, Barbados
The parish of St. Michael is one of eleven parishes of Barbados. It has a land area of and is found at the southwest portion of the island. Saint Michael has survived by name as one of the original six parishes created in 1629 by Governor Sir William Tufton. The parish is home to Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados. Bridgetown is the centre of commercial activity in Barbados, as well as a central hub for the public transport network. Other major infrastructure in St. Michael is the international seaport of Barbados—the Deep Water Harbour. Therein, a number of cruise ships arrive and depart including various lines such as Royal Caribbean and Cunard. West Indian Cricket Team In England In 1906
The West Indies cricket team toured England in the 1906 English cricket season, 1906 season. The team played 19 matches between 11 June and 18 August 1906 of which 13 were regarded as first-class. A somewhat more formal selection process seems to have been followed than for the 1900 tour but the team was still selected by representatives from Barbados, British Guiana and Trinidad. The team was perhaps a little stronger than that of 1900 but two tours to the West Indies in 1901-02 and 1904-05 had shown again that the combined West Indies team was of quite a modest standard compared to English first-class counties. Despite this the same mistake was made as in 1900 and an overly ambitious tour programme was arranged. This included 19 matches, mostly against first-class counties. The Second Boer War (, , 11 October 189931 May 1902), also known as the Boer War, Transvaal War, Anglo–Boer War, or South African War, was a conflict fought between the British Empire and the two Boer republics (the South African Republic and Orange Free State) over Britain's influence in Southern Africa. The Witwatersrand Gold Rush caused a large influx of "Uitlander, foreigners" (''Uitlanders'') to the South African Republic (SAR), mostly British from the Cape Colony. The West Indies cricket team toured England in the 1900 season. The team played 17 matches between 11 June and 11 August 1900. There had been three tours by teams of English Amateurs to the West Indies in the mid-1890s and the idea of sending a combined West Indies team to England had gradually developed. Several of the leading West Indies players were unavailable and the team that eventually sailed for England was a little weaker than had been anticipated. Despite the fact that it was known that earlier English touring sides had been of very modest standard, the opponents that were arranged for the 1900 tourists were in general of too high a standard, with 12 of the 17 being of first-class standard. The Inter-Colonial Tournament was the main first class cricket, first class cricket competition in the West Indian cricket team, West Indies held between 1892–93 and 1938-39.
