Harley Usill
Harley John Vaughan Usill (13 July 1925 – 7 October 1991) was a British record company executive. With Cyril Clarke (father of James Kenelm Clarke) he was joint founder and managing director of British record label Argo Records (UK), Argo Records. Early life and background Usill was born at Portsmouth, the only son and elder child of Harley Verneau Usill (1898-1978), a director of the publishing firm Evans Brothers Ltd and later founder of Naldrett Press, who served as Mayor of Epsom and Ewell, Surrey in 1953 and also as a magistrate and alderman, and Marguerite Jeannie Vaughan Dorey (1898-1983). The Usill family were middle-class professionals; the elder Harley Usill- son of Battersea surveyor and civil engineer Harley Mackenzie Usill- was educated at St Lawrence College, Ramsgate, and had a University of Oxford Bachelor of Arts degree. James Kenelm Clarke
James Kenelm Clarke (5 February 1941 – 29 July 2020) was an English film director and composer of film, television and library music. Early life and education Clarke was born in Great Rissington, Gloucestershire, the son of musician and author Cyril Clarke and the artist Eularia Clarke. With Harley Usill, Cyril Clarke established Argo Records in 1951. Epsom College
Epsom College is a co-educational independent school on Epsom Downs, Surrey, England, for pupils aged 11 to 18. It was founded in 1853 as a benevolent institution which provided a boarding school education for sons of poor or deceased members of the medical profession and also accommodation for pensioned doctors. The college soon after foundation opened to pupils from outside the medical profession. Over time the charitable work for medical professionals in hardship moved to a separate charity. ASV Records
ASV Records was a London-based record label set up by Harley Usill, founder of Argo Records (UK), Argo Records, Decca producer and former Argo general manager, Kevin Daly, and producer Jack Boyce, after Argo's parent company Decca Records, Decca was bought by PolyGram in 1980. ASV stood for "Academy Sound and Vision". The label was bought by the Sanctuary Records Group in May 1999. ASV, which was founded in London in 1981, was mainly a classical label, but its catalogue included Bing Crosby, Cole Porter, The Ink Spots, and The Boswell Sisters. Decca Records is a British record label established in 1929 by Edward Lewis (Decca), Edward Lewis after his acquisition of a gramophone manufacturer, The Decca Gramophone Company. It set up an American subsidiary under the Decca name, which became an independent company just before the Second World War. The American spin-off became a subsidiary of MCA Inc. in 1962. Frank Humphrey Sinkler Jennings (19 August 1907 – 24 September 1950) was an English documentary filmmaker and one of the founders of the Mass Observation organisation. Jennings was described by film critic and director Lindsay Anderson in 1954 as "the only real poet that British cinema has yet produced." Argo Records (UK)
Argo Records is a record label founded by Harley Usill and Cyril Clarke in 1951 with the intention of recording "British music played by British artists", but the company's releases expanded to include spoken word recordings and other projects. Genres Argo's first issue, ''Music from Bali'', was dedicated to the Indonesian gamelan (ensemble) recorded at the Winter Garden Theatre, London. The catalogue eventually ran to 1,000 items. In 1953, Usill was introduced to Indian musician Deben Bhattacharya, who was responsible for field recordings of traditional music in India. Bhattacharya had been frustrated by the absence of recordings he could use for his BBC Radio broadcasts. Around the same time, Walter Harris recorded an amateur Brazilian choir in Rio de Janeiro. St Lawrence College, Ramsgate
St Lawrence College is a co-educational independent school situated in Ramsgate, Kent and has been established as a " public school" ever since it was founded. History The college was founded in 1879 as South Eastern College (colours: gold and black). The name was changed in September 1906 because of its location in the St Lawrence area of Ramsgate. New colours were also given: maroon and white. The school rapidly outgrew the single house, leading to the main building of the present day college by 1884. The chapel was completed in 1927.
