John Harkes
John Andrew Harkes (born March 8, 1967) is an American soccer coach and former professional player who is the head coach of Greenville Triumph SC. A member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, Harkes was the first American ever to play in the English Premier League with Sheffield Wednesday, the second American to score at Wembley Stadium, and the first American soccer player to appear in the final of a major English tournament, in the 1991 Football League Cup Final with Sheffield Wednesday. After moving to Major League Soccer in 1996, he won two MLS Cup titles with D.C. United. A mainstay in the U.S. national team midfield for most of the 1990s, Harkes appeared in two FIFA World Cup tournaments. He was named the team's "Captain for Life" by then-head coach Steve Sampson before having that title stripped from ahead of the 1998 World Cup. Erin Harkes is an American singer-songwriter. Music career Harkes is known in the Albany area, having been named among the Capital District's best musicians by both the '' Albany Times-Union'' and '' Metroland''. She also regularly teams up with the Albany-based band Sirsy. In 2004, Harkes teamed up with Albany, NY-based band Folding Sky to enter the 2004 Colossal Contender Blues Competition, which they won giving them a shot to compete in Memphis. In addition, she has opened for acts such as the 10,000 Maniacs and Company of Thieves. On April 7, 2010, Harkes was chosen from the audience to participate in a "Battle of the Instant Bands" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Gerbrand Harkes
Gerbrand Harkes (also Garbrand Herks, Harks, Harcks, etc.) (fl. 1538–1593) was a Dutch Protestant who became a bookseller and dealer in manuscripts in England. Life Harks was born around 1510 in the Low Countries. He was an early convert to Calvinism and in 1538 fled to Protestant England, where he settled as a bookseller at Bulkeley Hall, since incorporated into Oriel College, Oxford.Niall C.E.J. Harker is an English surname. Some genealogical records show that the origin of Harker comes from the North-West regions of England- North of the Lake District. Speculation is that Harker is the result of the combination of Romanized hyphenation of the surnames Hart or Hare and Kerr. (Hart - a type of stag; Hare - a rabbit; Kerr - a marshland.) It is also assumed that the Harker family were romanized subjects who lived on both sides of Hadrian's Wall in that area. Harkers can be found mostly in Northern England. In the United States, there are concentrations of Harkers living in communities across the Rocky Mountains from Mexico to Canada.
