Stadlau
Stadlau () is a neighbourhood in Vienna, Austria, within Donaustadt, the 22nd district of Vienna. It has a population of 16.152 and covers 4.99 km2. History Stadlau was first recorded in 1150 as "Stadelouve," meaning "barn in the floodplain." Originally a fief of the Babenbergs, it was home to wealthy farmers who controlled the fertile land between the Danube and the Prater. Its strategic location in the Marchfeld made it an important crossing point, with a ferry connecting it to the city. In 1160, a parish church was built to serve the surrounding villages. However, a devastating flood in 1438 destroyed much of the settlement. By around 1820, Stadlau had developed into a small linear village with just 10 to 15 houses. The Danube regulation of the 1870s transformed the landscape, drying up nearby tributaries. Aspern () is a neighbourhood in Vienna, Austria, within Donaustadt, the Districts of Vienna, 22nd district of Vienna. It has a population of 52,375 as of 2023 and covers an area of 19.89 km2. History The area is known for the Battle of Aspern-Essling, which was fought in the nearby Lobau on 21 and 22 May 1809 during the Fifth Coalition, War of the Fifth Coalition. In the battle, the Austrian Empire, Austrian army, led by Archduke Charles of Austria, Archduke Charles, repelled an advance by Napoleon; it was the closest the French emperor had come to being defeated since his rise to power. The German orthography reform of 1996 (') was a change to German spelling and punctuation that was intended to simplify German orthography and thus to make it easier to learn, without substantially changing the rules familiar to users of the language. The reform was based on an international agreement signed in Vienna in July 1996 by the governments of the German-speaking countries—Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Luxembourg did not participate despite having German as one of its three official languages: it regards itself "as a non-German-speaking country not to be a contributory determinant upon the German system of spelling", though it did eventually adopt the reform. Ulrich of Hardegg ( or or ; after 1483 – 1535) was an Austrian nobleman from the Prüschenk family of Count of Hardegg. He was "Cup-bearer" of Austria, which, by this time, was a title of nobility and no longer involved looking after the arch-duke's wine cellar. He was also steward in Styria. Origin and family Ulrich's father, Count Henry of Hardegg (formerly: Henry Prüschenk, Baron zu Stettenberg; ; died: 1513) served in the imperial army, and was temporarily Imperial Captain in Italy.
