Hard Damage
''Hard Damage'' is a 2019 debut poetry collection by Aria Aber. It was published by University of Nebraska Press after winning the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry in 2018. In 2020, Aber received a Whiting Award for the book. Contents Aber grew up as the daughter of Afghan refugees who resettled in Germany. She later moved to the United States and studied poetry at New York University's MFA program. Written partly during Aber's studies in New York City, the book's poems contend with, among other things, historical events in Afghanistan such as the Soviet–Afghan War and the funding of the Afghan mujahideen. Some of the poems make reference to Rainer Maria Rilke, such as "Reading Rilke at Lake Mendota, Wisconsin". In interviews, Aber cited Rilke as an enormous influence on her as a poet and person. Aria Aber
Aria Aber (born 1991) is a German-born poet and writer based in the United States. Early life Aber was born and raised in Münster, Germany to Afghan refugees. Aber moved to London in 2011 and graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English literature. She later completed a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Poetry at New York University. Career Aber's poems have appeared in ''The New Yorker'', ''The New Republic'', and ''The Kenyon Review''. Aber has received awards and fellowships from Kundiman, the Wisconsin Institute of Creative Writing, and the Whiting Foundation. Aber was the spring 2020 Li Shen Visiting Writer at Mills College. She was formerly a Stegner Fellow in Poetry at Stanford University. Aber is a faculty member of the University of Vermont as an assistant professor of Creative Writing and resides between Vermont and Brooklyn. Poetry Collections
A poetry collection is often a compilation of several Poetry, poems by one poet to be published in a single Volume (bibliography), volume or chapbook. A collection can include any number of poems, ranging from a few (e.g. the four long poems in T. S. Eliot's ''Four Quartets'') to several hundred poems (as is often seen in collections of haiku). Typically the poems included in single volume of poetry, or a cycle of poems, are linked by their style or Theme (narrative), thematic material. Most poets publish several volumes of poetry through the course of their life while other poets publish one (e.g. Walt Whitman's lifelong expansion of ''Leaves of Grass''). Solmaz Sharif
Solmaz Sharif (; born 1983) is an Iranian-American poet. Her debut poetry collection, ''Look'', was a finalist for the 2016 National Book Award. She is currently an Assistant Professor of English at UC Berkeley. Early life and education Sharif was born in Istanbul, Turkey as her parents were in the process of emigrating from Iran to the United States; her parents had studied in the US during the 1970s but had returned to Iran during the Iranian Revolution. Newborn Sharif and her family settled first in Texas, where her father finished his studies; the family moved again a few years later to Birmingham, Alabama, where her mother finished her bachelor's degree. After her mother graduated the family finally settled in Los Angeles, California, when Sharif was 11 years old. While living in Los Angeles, Sharif was exposed to the largest Iranian population outside of Iran itself, but was ostracized by her Iranian peers upon her arrival because of her family's struggle assimilating.
