Happy Hardcore
Happy hardcore, also known as 4-beat or happycore, is a subgenre of hardcore dance music or " hard dance". It emerged both from the UK breakbeat hardcore rave scene, and Belgian, German and Dutch hardcore techno scenes in the early 1990s. What makes happy hardcore stand apart from gabber is that happy hardcore tends to have breakbeats running alongside the 4/4 kick drum. History Origins The breakbeat hardcore rave scene was beginning to fragment by late 1992 into a number of subsequent breakbeat-based genres: darkcore (tracks embracing dark-themed samples and stabs), hardcore jungle (reggae basslines and influences became prominent), and 4-beat also known as "happy hardcore" where piano rolls and uplifting vocals were still central to the sound. Breakbeat Hardcore
Breakbeat hardcore (also referred to as hardcore rave, oldskool hardcore or simply hardcore) is a music genre that spawned from the UK rave scene during the early 1990s. It combines four-on-the-floor rhythms with breakbeats usually sampled from hip hop. In addition to the inclusion of breakbeats, the genre also features shuffled drum machine patterns, hoover, and other noises originating from new beat and Belgian techno, sounds from acid house and bleep techno, and often upbeat house piano riffs and vocals. DJ Dougal
Paul Arnold Clarke (born 14th April 1975), professionally known as DJ Dougal, is a British UK happy hardcore producer and DJ. Career Clarke first became involved with the dance music scene at the age of 15, while setting up sound systems for some of the first acid house parties, as part of work experience assignment to a music shop. Through this, he met Murray Beetson (of ''ESP Promotions'' and promoter of the Dreamscape raves) and became a resident at raves including Equinox Milwaukees, Dreamscape and Helter Skelter. His style is a mix of euphoric hardcore with uplifting vocals. He has worked alongside many other hardcore artists including DNA, Gammer and Hixxy, though in recent years, most of his work has been with Gammer. Several years ago, he – along with Hixxy – created the successful label ''Essential Platinum'', which has had many releases. Toy Town
"Toy Town" is a happy hardcore track by British duo Hixxy and Sharkey. Released in 1995, the single was a hit in the UK clubbing scene, peaked at number 24 in the UK dance singles chart, and had a pivotal impact in the UK rave music scene with a move away from breakbeat towards the newer happy hardcore "cheesy" sound. History The track, written and produced by Hixxy and Sharkey, was inspired by the earlier "toytown techno" phase characterised by tracks such as " Charly" by the Prodigy. It starts with a chopped amen break, and goes on to feature "sugar sweet" vocals, a "bouncy kick" and an "ultra-cheesy stab pattern". It has elements of hip hop, house, gabba and techno. Playing at the high tempo characteristic of the "speedrush" of the genre, by the end of the track it has been described as going towards "unstoppable mania". React Music Limited
React Music Limited was a British independent record label, based in London, formed in 1990 by James Horrocks and Thomas Foley. James Horrocks was initially involved with successful dance music independent Rhythm King, and React pursued a similar approach — specifically electronic dance music, house music, acid house, techno and rave, along with newer "dance" oriented subgenres which emerged throughout the 1990s. Bonkers (compilation Album Series)
The ''Bonkers'' series was one of the leading happy hardcore compilation series in the UK. The first release was in 1996 on the record label React Music Limited, React (now Resist). It was available on 2xCompact disc, CD and 2xCassette tape, TC formats. DJs DJ Sharkey, Sharkey and Hixxy were signed by React, and they released "Bonkers", the first in a series of albums that has become the best-selling hardcore compilation series of all time. As of 11 May 2009, the series had reached its nineteenth release, titled ''Bonkers: The Original Hardcore''. "Pretty Green Eyes" is a song originally written and recorded by Force & Styles featuring Junior. An album mix appeared on their debut album, '' All Over the UK'' (1996), and the song was released as a 12-inch single in 1997. The song achieved mainstream popularity in 2003 when it was covered by Ultrabeat and peaked at 2 on the UK Singles Chart. Force & Styles version The Force & Styles version was a happy hardcore, recorded with Junior at their own 'UK Dance Studios', in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex in 1996. "Heart of Gold" is a song written and recorded by Force & Styles. It was first recorded and released on Force & Styles album '' All over the UK'' (1996) with the vocals originally sung by popular hardcore vocalist Jenna Barr, and it was released as a single in 1998 with vocals by Kelly Llorenna. DJ Sharkey (born Jonathan Kneath on 25 July 1974) is a British record producer, disc jockey and rapper. As of September 2011 he is semi-retired from music production and performance. Sharkey has performed in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada, and Japan. Career Sharkey initially became known as an MC at "hardcore rave" events in Britain in 1993. In 1995, he moved into music production, teaming up with DJ Hixxy to release the track "Toy Town", which proved one of the most significant signature tunes of the UK's happy hardcore style in the 1990s. Darren Styles
Darren James Mew (born 23 May 1975), better known as Darren Styles, is an English music producer, DJ, singer and songwriter from Clacton-On-Sea, Essex. Originally a member of the breakbeat hardcore group DJ Force & the Evolution, Styles found success during the 1990s as one half of Force & Styles. The duo were pioneers of happy hardcore and wrote several well-known songs such as "Heart of Gold (Force & Styles song), Heart of Gold", "Pretty Green Eyes" and "Paradise & Dreams". In the early 2000s, Styles began producing more trance music, trance-influenced records with Mark Breeze, Mark Brady as Styles & Breeze. The duo released two hit singles "You're Shining" (2002) and "Heartbeatz" (2003) which both reached the top 20 of the UK Singles Chart. Mark Breeze (real name Mark Brady, born 1970), also known as DJ Breeze, is a British DJ and producer of UK hardcore music. He is best known for his collaborations with Darren Styles as Styles & Breeze and the compilation mix series Clubland X-Treme Hardcore. He is also the founder of the label Infinity Recordings, running it from 1997 to 2003, when DJ Silver took over its operations.
