Hans Puggaard
Hans Puggaard (3 September 1788 - 8 April 1866) was a Danish merchant and shipowner who founded H. Puggaard & Co. in 1813. The company became a leading wholesaler of grain and was also active in the market for import of goods such as coffee and especially sugar. Puggaard was also an important philanthropist dedicating much of his fortune to social causes. Puggaard's wife, Bolette Puggaard née Hage, a daughter of Christopher Friedenreich Hage, was a painter. The couple supported many of the artists of the Danish Golden Age. Their daughter married Orla Lehmann. Early life and education Puggard was born in Copenhagen in poor conditions. His parents were Thomas Puggaard (1748-1818) and Cathrine Marie Puggaard née Svane (1754-1814). Christopher Friedenreich Hage (1759–1849)
Christopher Friedenreich Hage (19 July 1759 – 15 August 1849), was a Danish merchant on the island of Møn. He was the father of Alfred Hage, Hother Hage, Johannes Dam Hage and Bolette Hage. Early life and career Hage was born in 1759, in Stege on Møn the son of Johannes Jensen Hage (1714-1791) and Bodil Margrethe Friedenreich (1729-1805). His family had been merchants on the island for many generations and he followed in his father's footsteps. Having acquired significant wealth, he built the Hage House in Stege in 1796. He was the younger brother of Jens Friedenreich Hage. Family He married Arnette Christiane née Just. They had 10 children. His sons Alfred Hage and Christopher Theodor Friedenreich Hage (1819-1872) became successful merchants. Christian Albrecht Jensen
Christian Albrecht Jensen (26 June 1792 – 13 July 1870) was a Danish portrait painter who was active during the Golden Age of Danish Painting in the first half of the 19th century. Painting more than 400 portraits over the course of his career, he depicted most of the leading figures of the Danish Golden Age, including the writer Hans Christian Andersen, the painter Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, the physicist Hans Christian Ørsted and the theologian N. F. S. Grundtvig. Although Jensen experienced considerable commercial success, he received little official appreciation from the artistic establishment of his day. Schooner
A schooner () is a type of sailing vessel defined by its rig: fore-and-aft rigged on all of two or more masts and, in the case of a two-masted schooner, the foremast generally being shorter than the mainmast. A common variant, the topsail schooner also has a square topsail on the foremast, to which may be added a topgallant. Differing definitions leave uncertain whether the addition of a fore course would make such a vessel a brigantine. Many schooners are gaff-rigged, but other examples include Bermuda rig and the staysail schooner. The origins of schooner rigged vessels is obscure, but there is good evidence of them from the early 17th century in paintings by Dutch marine artists. Ordrup
Ordrup is a district of Gentofte Municipality in the northern suburbs of Copenhagen, Denmark. It is located circa north of the city centre. History Ordrup was originally a small village which only consisted of eight farms and a forge. The area became a popular destination for excursions for citizens from Copenhagen in the 17th century. The farmers supplemented their income by harvesting peat that was sold on the market in Copenhagen. Ordrup came under Bernstorff Palace in the 1760s after Foreign Minister Johann Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff had received the entire area from Christian V as a gift. Bernstorff was a driving force behind the agricultural reforms of the time. A detailed map of the land was drawn up. The land was divided into lots. Gammel Skovgård, Gentofte Municipality
Gammel Skovgård is a former country house in Gentofte Municipality in the northern suburbs of Copenhagen, Denmark. It was originally located at the site where Skovgård School in Ordrup is now located but moved to its current site at Krathusvej 36 when the school was built in the 1950s. History Origins Peter von Scholten purchased an estate in Ordrup for use as a country house in around 1811. The building now known as Gammel Skovgaard was constructed for him in around 1820. Dronningens Tværgade ( lit. "The Queen's Cross Street") is a street in central Copenhagen, Denmark, which runs from Bredgade to Rosenborg Castle Garden. The street originally formed a link between the King's Garden (Rosenborg Castle Gardens) and the Queen's Garden. With the Odd Fellows Mansion on Bredgade and the central pavilions of the east fringe of the castle garden located at each their end, the street has axial qualities. Nyhavn 43 is a historic townhouse overlooking the Nyhavn Canal in central Copenhagen, Denmark. The building was listed on the Danish registry of protected buildings and places in 1945. History 18th century In the late 17th century, Nyhavn 41–49 was part of one large property. It was by 1689 as No. 28 owned by tanner Villum Lydersen. The property was by 1756 as No. 22 owned by brewer Paul Christensen Widsten (Hvidsteen). The current building was built for him some time before 1788. The property was later acquired by brewer Poul Christensen Hvidsten (Widsten, 1712–91). He operated a brewery at the site. Nyhavn 31 is a listed property overlooking the Nyhavn canal in central Copenhagen, Denmark. History 17th and 18th centuries The property was listed in Copenhagen's first cadastre of 1689 as No. 11 in St. Ann's East Quarter. It was owned by skipper Mikkel Jensen at that time. The present building on the site was constructed with two storeys for skipper Thomas Andersen between 1691 and 1714. Christopher Puggaard
Christopher Puggaard (or Hans Christopher Wilhelm Puggaard, born on 23 May 1823 in Copenhagen, and died on 14 August 1864 in Caen, Normandy) was a Danish geologist. Early life and education Puggaard was born on 23 May 1923 in Copenhagen, the son of the son of Hans and Bolette Puggaard. His elder brother was the later businessman Rudolph Puggaard. He studied at Roskilde Cathedral School, whereupon he studied in the polytechnic school and got his diploma in natural science in 1846. He was fascinated in particular by the classes of the country's leading geologist, Johan Georg Forchhammer. He travelled then to further his studies in England and Paris and later Italy, together with his friend the painter Wilhelm Marstrand.
